Thomas Record Setting Day Leads Yellow Jackets Past Ursuline

BEREA, Ohio – Freshman midfielder Sierra Thomas (Medina) set the Baldwin Wallace University school-record for goals in a game with six as the women's lacrosse team defeated NCAA Division II Ursuline College in the second game of the four game home stand by final score of 21-9 on Tressel Field in The George Finnie Stadium.

BW (5-2) remained undefeated at home and now has a 4-0 record against NAIA and NCAA Division II schools. Ursuline (1-2), who is playing in its first collegiate season, has dropped two straight after winning its inaugural game.

The Yellow Jackets were led Thomas' six goals and three assists. Freshman midfielder Maddie Russell (Lakewood/Rocky River) tallied four goals and added an assist. Junior midfielder Cara Wood (Shaker Heights/Laurel) and senior midfielder Colleen Bodkin (East Aurora, N.Y.) each recorded three goals while Woodadded an assist. Sophomore Victoria Budzyn (East Aurora, N.Y.) contributed two goals and had two assists. Freshman midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River), who leads the team in assists with 14, scored two goals and had a game-high five assists.

The Arrows were led Maddie Kipp with four goals while Sarah Kiefer and Bailey Patterson each had two goals.

BW jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Ursuline scored two unanswered goals with the last coming at the 13:09 mark when Kiefer found the back of the net. The Yellow Jackets got three goals from Thomas and two from Wood in the early stages while Kocher assisted on three of the goals. The two teams would each add a goal over the remainder of the half as BW led 9-3 at the intermission.


The Arrows opened the second half by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 3-2 to cut the lead down to 11-6 when Kipp scored the unassisted goal with 23:09 remaining. BW would score three unanswered goals to push the lead back to 14-6 on goals by Thomas, Wood and Budzyn with the last coming at the 17:45 mark. The Yellow Jackets would outscore Ursuline 7-3 down the stretch to secure the win.

In goal, senior Bridget Walsh (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) played 30 minutes in the first half and allowed three goals and made one save as she improved to 5-2. Freshman Gabrielle Nondorf (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) played 30 minutes in the second half and allowed six goals and made eight saves.

BW outshot the Arrows, 44-26, including 36-18 in shots on-goal but the Arrows held a 28-25 advantage in ground balls.

The Yellow Jackets next play on Wednesday, March 26 when they hosts Franciscan University on Tressel Field at 7:30 p.m. BW ends its four game home stand on Friday, March 28 contest against Hilbert (N.Y.)
