BW Women’s Lacrosse Team Beats Franciscan for Fifth Straight Win

BEREA, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team won its school-record fifth straight game as it defeated Franciscan University, 20-4, in a non-conference game on Tressel Field in The George Finnie Stadium.

BW (6-2) was led by freshmen midfielders Maddie Russell (Lakewood/Rocky River) and Sierra Thomas (Medina) with four goals. Russell had three assists and Thomas had one Senior midfielder Colleen Bodkin (East Aurora, N.Y.) had three goals and added two assists and junior attack Victoria Budzyn (East Aurora, N.Y.) recorded two goals and added three assists. Junior midfielder Cara Wood (Shaker Heights/Laurel) and senior attack Becky Russell (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler Area) each contributed two goals. Freshman midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River) tallied a goal and a game-high five assists.

Franciscan (1-6) got two goals from Lauren Noce and one each from Tracy McClelland and Shannon Root.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring when Kocher found the back of the net off the assist from Maddie Russell with 26:57 remaining. The Barons tied the game at 1-1 as McClelland scored the unassisted goal at the 25:08 mark. BW closed out the half by scoring 14 unanswered goals.

Franciscan ended the Yellow Jacket goal streak at 16 straight and cut the lead down to 17-2 when Noce found the back of the net with 19:33 remaining. After BW goal by senior midfielder Ellen Fedick (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy), the Barons tacked on their third goal from Root to cut the score down to 18-3.

In goal, senior Bridget Walsh (Elyria/ Elyria Catholic) played 30 minutes in the first half, faced one shot, allowed one goal and had no saves as she improved to 6-2 overall. Freshman Gabrielle Nondorf (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) played 30 minutes in the second half and faced five shots and allowed three goals with one save.

BW outshot Franciscan, 49-6, including 40-5 in shots on-goal and held a 46-15 advantage in ground balls.

The Yellow Jackets end their four-game homestand this Friday, March 28 when they host Hilbert (N.Y.) College at Finnie Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Fans can follow and watch all of the action live at http://livestats.prestosports.com/baldwinwallace/
