Men’s Swimming and Diving Sets Three School Records, Stands in Fourth Place After Day One of OAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's swimming and diving team set three school records and stands in fourth place after the first full day of competition at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Wilmington College inside the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron.

BW is fourth of six teams with 140.5 points.  Defending champion John Carroll University is in first place with 290.5 points. 

Individuals

  • Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC stroker Tommie McQueary (Batavia/Bethel Park) placed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley in a career-best time of 1:53.98
  • Junior freestyler Austin Kingsley (Northport, N.Y.) finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in a school-record time of 4:45.13.  Kingsley first set the school-record in the prelims in a time of 4:46.06 which broke his own record from a season ago
  • Senior Academic All-OAC freestyler Mason Kooyman (Concord Township/Chardon) tied for sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 21.22. 

Relays

  • The 200-yard freestyle squad of Kingsley, McQueary, junior stroker Luke Minick (Stow/Akron Archbishop Hoban) and Kooyman took fifth in a school-record time of 1:25.38.  The previous record of 1:26.48 was set 13 years ago.
  • The 400-yard medley team of Kingsley, sophomore stroker Tyler Warner (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico Academy), McQueary and Kooyman finished fourth in a school-record time of 3:29.18
  • The 800-yard freestyle unit of sophomore freestyler Kevin Meyer (Mentor), junior freestyler Erik Tagg (Pittsburgh, Pa./, Chartiers Valley), senior Academic All-OAC freestyler Grant Doolittle (Tekonsha, Mich./Marshall) and junior stroker Jason Tafoya (El Paso, Texas) was fifth in a time of 7:26.02

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, February 16 when it competes on the second day of the OAC Championships.   Preliminary action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with finals to be contested at 6 p.m.
