Men’s Swimming and Diving Defeats Hiram on Day 1 of BW Fall Duals

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's swimming and diving team defeated Hiram College on the first day of the two day BW Fall Duals in the BW Natatorium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (2-0) won all eight events, had seven runner-up finishes and set one BW Natatorium as it defeated Hiram by a final score of 122-26.

The Yellow Jackets individual highlights included: 

  • Freshman Jason Tafoya (El Paso, Texas) won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:06.08 and the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 58.94 seconds
  • Freshman Gannon Mellett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) won the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:55.72
  • Freshman Austin Kingsley (Northport, N.Y.) won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 50.88
  • Freshman Tommie McQueary (Batavia/Bethel Tate) won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:02.42
  • Freshman Davis Pickett (Akron/Firestone) won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:05.75

BW relays were highlighted by:

  • The 200-yard medley team of Tafoya, McQueary, freshman Tyson Swihart (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Military Academy) and junior Austin Olsavsky (Medina) as the touched the wall first in a time of 1:43.03
  • The 800-yard freestyle squad of freshman Martin Koenen (Chardon), Mellett, Kingsley and Olsavsky won in a BW Natatorium-record time of 7:31.75, which had stood for 27 years.

The Yellow Jackets return to the pool on Saturday, October 23 for the second and final day of the BW Fall Duals at 12 p.m.
