Men's Basketball Drops Overtime Thriller to Oswego St. in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team dropped an overtime thriller to Oswego St. (N.Y.) College by a score of 75-71 in the Max Ziel Gymnasium inside Laker Hall.

BW (21-9) was led senior All-OAC guard Kyle Nader (Vermilion) who marked a career-high 18 points and secured a career-high 10 rebounds. Three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference and two-time Academic All-OAC guard Jay Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) marked 17 points while junior Academic All-OAC guard Michael Quiring (Brunswick) tallied 13 and sophomore guard Luke Schaefer (Medina) recorded 11.

Oswego (24-5) was led by sophomore guard Liam Sanborn and junior guard Brandan Gartland as each scored 20 points. Senior center Tyler Pierre recorded 16 rebounds and poured in 14 points while junior forward Joe Sullivan scored 12.

Oswego fell behind early but eventually claimed a 9-7 lead after four offensive rebounds through the first five minutes. BW tied it at 9 a piece with a Nader layup, before the Lakers extended their lead to 20-15 with an 11-6 run with 10 minutes left in the first. The Yellow Jackets tied it up at 24-24 at 7:04 with a 9-4 run, capped off with a Battle trey, assisted by Nader. The Lakers closed the second half on a 13-10 run as Nader sunk a layup before the clock expired and BW went into halftime trailing 37-34.

The Yellow Jackets knotted things up at 41-41 after a 7-4 run with a Battle trey at 16:54. Over the next six minutes, the Lakers went on a 14-9 run to establish a 55-50 advantage with 10:29 left in regulation. Both squads battled over the following seven minutes as each team scored 11 points to bring the score to 66-61. BW tied the game up at 66-66 after a three from Quiring and a driving layup from junior forward Tyler Colombo (Strasburg/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) with two minutes left in the second half. Neither team scored in the final minutes and headed to overtime with the score knotted up at 66.

Oswego scored the first basket of the extra period at 3:11 off a Gartland layup. BW took a 69-68 lead after Quiring knocked down a shot-clock beating trey at 1:51. Oswego took a 70-69 edge after a Sullivan layup and BW tied it up at 70-70 with a Colombo free-throw. The Lakers scored on a Sanborn layup with 31 seconds left to play and Nader drilled one-of-two free throws to bring the score to 72-71 with 15 seconds remaining. Oswego sunk their next three free-throws to seal the 75-71 victory.
