Baseball Defeats Rockford (Ill.) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classsic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Rockford (Ill.) University by a score of 11-6 in a non-conference game at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

BW (8-0), who begins the season 8-0 for the first time since 2015, scored three runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth, four in the sixth, two in eighth and one in the ninth. Rockford (3-1) scored one run in the second inning, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the ninth.  

The Yellow Jackets were led by senior centerfielder Cole Nieto (Brunswick/St. Ignatius) as he went four-for-five with two stolen bases. Senior first baseman Kevin Hagen (Brecksville/St. Ignatius) went two-for-four with two doubles.

The BW pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts led by sophomore pitcher Brandon Lekan (Strongsville) as he pitched five and two-thirds innings with five strikeouts. Sophomore Jack Raines (Uniontown/Akron Archbishop Hoban) and freshmen Spencer Aukerman (Medina) and Max Adams (Massillon/Washington) came out of the bullpen and did not allow an earned run. Raines closed out the fifth, Raines pitched two innings with two strikeouts and Adams pitched the ninth and recorded two strikeouts.

BW is back in action on Monday, March 6 when it travels to Port Charlotte, Florida for a non-conference game against Wheaton (Ill.) College at the Snowbird Baseball Classic at 10:30 a.m.
