Baseball Splits OAC Doubleheader at Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split with Capital University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Clawson Field.

BW (19-13, 8-8 OAC) game one by a score of 9-2 and Capital (16-17, 4-10 OAC) took game two by a score of 6-3.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored nine runs on 16 hits as they scored one run in the second inning, four in the third, one in the seventh and junior right fielder Alex Marcum (Granville) hit a three-run homer in the ninth. The Crusaders scored one run in both the fifth and ninth innings.

Senior All-OAC starting pitcher Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) picked up his fourth victory of the year as pitched eight innings, recorded five strikeouts and only allowed three hits and one run. Sophomore reliever Danny Cody (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) pitched the final inning and allowed two hits and a run.

Offensively the Yellow Jackets were led by Marcum and junior catcher Trent Kaltenbach (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) as they each recorded three hits. Marcum went three-for-five with four RBIs and Kaltenbach went three-for-four with a RBI. In addition, freshman second baseman Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) went two-for-three with a triple and three RBIs.

In game two, BW scored three runs on 11 hits as it scored one run in the fifth inning and two in the seventh. Capital scored one goal in the second, three in the third and two in the eighth.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets senior first baseman Kevin Hagen (Brecksville/St. Ignatius) as he went three-for-four. Junior centerfielder Chase Knodle (Poland/Seminary) went two-for-five with a RBI and Kaltenbach went two-for-four.

On the mound, freshman Michael Hubert (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) was handed the loss and made it two and two-thirds innings and allowed seven hits and four runs. Freshman Max Adams (Massillon/Washington) pitched two and two-thirds and allowed just two hits and no runs. Cody pitched the final two and two-thirds and allowed four hits and two runs.
