Baseball Sweeps Weekend Series Against Anderson (Ind.)

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Anderson (Ind.) University in a pair of non-conference games this weekend at Bishop Chatard High School on Dave Alexander Field.

BW (2-0) won game one by a score of 12-0 and took game two by a final of 10-4.

In game one, BW scored one run in the fourth, 10 runs in the fifth highlighted by three homeruns and sophomore designated hitter Philip Wells (Buffalo, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) closed out the scoring in the seventh with a one run homer.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by junior third baseman Spencer Badia (Bellaire), Philip Wells (Buaffalo, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) and senior right fielder Alex Marcum (Granville) as they each went 2-for-5. Badia hit two homeruns in the fifth inning, scored two runs and tallied five runs batted in (RBI). Wells scored two runs, hit a solo homer and had two RBI.  Marcum hit a two RBI double and a one-run homer.

On the mound, sophomore starter Danny Cody (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Hts.), sophomore Brandon Lekan (Strongsville) and freshman Max Adams (Massillon/Jackson) combined for a one hitter. Cody earned his first career win as he pitched five scoreless innings with four strikeouts. In relief, Lekan pitched three innings with two strikeouts and Adams closed out the game with one strikeout in the ninth.

In game two, BW scored one run in the third, two in the fourth, two in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth. Anderson (0-2) scored one run in the eighth and three in the ninth.

Offensively the Yellow Jackets were led by freshman second baseman Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) and senior shortstop Steve Montgomery (Canton/Central Catholic) as they each went 2-for-3. Bonner scored one run, hit a double and had a career-high four RBIs. Montgomery batted in two runs.

Defensively, senior pitcher Logan Heffernan (Granville) earned his first victory of the year as he pitched six scoreless innings, tallied eight strikeouts and only allowed three hits.

BW is back in action on Saturday and Sunday February 25 and 26 when it travels to New Market, Virginia for three non-conference games. On Saturday the Yellow Jackets play a single game against Juniata (Pa.) College at 12 p.m. and on Sunday they play a doubleheader against Pitt-Bradford (Pa.) starting at 12 p.m.
