Baseball Wins Home Opener Versus Ohio Wesleyan

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team hit a season-high-tying four homeruns as it powered to a 12-4 non-conference victory against Ohio Wesleyan University in its home-opener on Fisher Field.

BW (10-4) scored 12 runs on 13 hits as it plated one run in the first, three runs in the third inning on dingers from junior third baseman Spencer Badia (Bellaire) and senior right fielder Alex Marcum (Granville), one in the fifth on a blast from senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference centerfielder Cole Nieto (Brunswick/ Cleveland St. Ignatius), four runs in the sixth when sophomore left fielder Reese Albright (North Royalton) went deep, one in the seventh and its final two runs in the eighth. Ohio Wesleyan (4-7) scored two runs each in the third and seventh.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Marcum as he went two-for-five with a triple, homerun and two runs batted-in (RBIs).  Badia, Albright, freshman second baseman Jacob Bonner (Akron/ Archbishop Hoban) and senior shortstop Steve Montgomery (Canton/ Central Catholic) all recorded two hits.

On the mound, senior All-OAC starting pitcher Logan Heffernan (Lebannon) picked up the victory with three innings of work as he allowed two unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Danny Cody (Brecksville/ Brecksville-Broadview Heights) pitched the next three innings and did not allow run on two hits with two strikeouts.  Sophomore Brandon Lekan (Strongsville) pitched the seventh and eighth innings and allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Junior All-OAC pitcher Evan Lovick (Mentor) pitched a scoreless ninth inning as he allowed two hits.

BW is back in action on Thursday, March 23 when they travel to La Roche, Pennsylvania for a non-conference game against La Roche College at 4 p.m.   The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 18 but was postponed to inclement weather.

The Yellow Jackets next play at Fisher Field this Saturday, March 25 when they host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in an OAC doubleheader. The first game begins at 1 p.m.
