Baseball Opens Spring Trip with Sweep of Elms (Mass.) at Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team opened its annual spring trip as it swept Elms (Mass.) College in a seven inning doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

BW (7-0) won game one by a score of 7-3 and picked up its seventh win of the year in game two with a 6-3 victory.

In game one, The Yellow Jackets scored one run in the fourth and fifth innings and five in the seventh. Elms (Mass.) College (0-3) scored all three of its runs in the bottom half of the seventh.

At the plate, BW was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference centerfielder Cole Nieto (Brunsick/St. Ignatius) and junior third baseman Spencer Badia (Bellaire) as they each recorded two hits. Nieto went two-for-three with a double and Badia went two-for-four with two runs batted in (RBI).

On the bump, All-OAC junior pitcher Evan Lovick (Mentor) earned his second win of the season as he pitched five innings and did not surrender an earned run. Sophomore Danny Cody (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), junior Brandon Wysong (Bradford), and freshman Spencer Auckerman (Medina) pieced together the final two innings for the Yellow Jackets.

In game two, BW scored one run in the fourth inning and five runs off of eight hits in the sixth. The Blazers hit two RBI doubles in the top half of the sixth to score all three of their runs.  

At the plate, Badia, Nieto, senior right fielder Alex Marcum (Granville) and senior shortstop Steve Montgomery (Canton/Central Catholic) led the way. Badia and Nieto each went two-for-four and Marcum and Montgomery each went two-for-two. Marcum batted in a team-high two runs and Montgomery drove in one as well.

Defensively, sophomore Jack Raines (Uniontown/Akron Archbishop Hoban) earned his first career win in an inning and two-thirds of work. Senior All-OAC pitcher Logan Heffernan (Lebanon) started the game pitched 5.1 innings with six strikeouts.

The Yellow Jackets continue its spring trip on Sunday, March 5 when they face Rockford (Ill.) University in a single non-conference game at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at 9 a.m.
