Second Straight Fourth Quarter Surge Leads BW Women to Fourth Victory

BEREA, Ohio – For the second straight game, the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team's Ohio Athletic Conference victory was sparked by a fourth quarter surge as the Yellow Jackets defeated Otterbein University, 75-67, in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (4-2, 2-0 OAC), who used a 16-2 run and outscored Otterbein, 27-18, in the fourth quarter, had four players score in double figures led by junior point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) with a team-high 12 points and a game-high five assists.  Freshman guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points.  Junior forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) tallied 10 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds while freshman forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) contributed a career-high 10 points. 

The Yellow Jackets have now won five straight games against the Cardinals.   The last Otterbein victory came in the 2012-13 season when the Cardinals swept the season series.

Otterbein (4-3, 0-2 OAC) had three players score in double digits led freshman guard by Dani Kissel with a game-high 17 points.  Senior All-OAC forward Amariah Huck tallied 13 points and a team-high tying five rebounds.  Sophomore guard Abby Miduri contributed 12 points, all coming from three-point land.

BW opened the game on a 6-2 run when Womeldorf knocked down a jumper at the 7:50 mark.  The Cardinals responded with a 7-0 run to take a 9-6 lead on a three-pointer by Ali Cartnal at 5:22.  The Yellow Jackets answered with a 7-0 run to regain the lead at 13-9 on a layup by junior point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) at the 2:33 mark. Otterbein scored the final three points and trailed 13-12 after one period of play.

The Cardinals continued its scoring streak as it opened the stanza on an 11-0 run to push its lead to 23-13 on a jumper by Taylor Pifher at the 5:02 mark.   BW outscored the Otterbein 10-7 down the stretch and cut the lead down to 30-23 on a triple by senior guard Allyson Helleis (Rocky River) with 20 seconds remaining.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on an 13-8 run to cut the lead down to 38-36 on a layup by Fecht at the 5:24 mark.  BW outscored the Cardinals 12-11 over the remainder of the period and cut the lead down to one point at 49-48 on a jumper by Colombo as the third quarter came to an end.

Otterbein opened the final stanza on a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 54-48 on a three-pointer by Miduri at the 7:58 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded with a 16-2 run to regain the lead at 64-56 when Lemmon hit a pair from the charity stripe at the 2:56 mark.  Both teams scored 11 points the remainder of the game.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, December 12 when they travel to New Concord for the first game of a women's and men's OAC doubleheader against Muskingum University on Performance Court at 2 p.m. The next home game is on Wednesday, Dec. 16 when BW hosts OAC rival Marietta College in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m.
