Lemmon's Double-Double Leads Women’s Basketball Past Cross-Town Rival John Carroll

BEREA, Ohio – Junior forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) recorded her fourth career double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team won a 73-65 Ohio Athletic Conference game against cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gymnasium.  

BW (14-8, 9-5 OAC) sweeps the season series with John Carroll (11-11, 6-9 OAC) and has won the last three meetings.  The Blue Streaks won both regular season meetings last year but was knocked out of the OAC Tournament by the Yellow Jackets in the semifinals.

Along with Lemmon, BW had three other players score in double figures led by sophomore guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park /Fairview) with a team-high 14 points.    Junior guard Mackenzie Colombo(Strasburg) tallied 11 points and senior guard Ally Dehart (Beaver, Pa.) scored a career-high 10 points.

John Carroll had three players score in double digits led by junior All-American and All-OAC forward Kaitlyn Spahar with a game-high 26 points. Also, Bri Pittenger scored 11 points and Smhoo Pryor scored 10 points. 

In the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets started off the game on an 8-0 run when Smith hit her second three pointer of the game forcing the Blue Streaks to take their first timeout of the game at the 8:00 mark. John Carroll responded with a 7-3 run of their own when Camille Adelman hit a runner through the lane to cut the BW lead to 11-7 at the 5:37 mark. The Blue Streaks cut the Yellow Jackets lead to, 14-12, when Spahar hit both of her free throws with 3:42 left in the first.  John Carroll outscored BW 7-3 to close out the period and take a 19-17 lead going into the second. 

The Blue Streaks extended their lead to, 25-19, at the start of the second quarter when Pittenger hit a runner from the elbow at the 7:46 mark. The Yellow Jackets went on an 8-4 run and knotted the game up at, 29-29, when Lemmon hit jumper with 2:09 left in the first half. BW outscored the Blue Streaks 6-3 in the final two minutes of the first half, when the Yellow Jackets capitalized on a late John Carroll turnover and freshman Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center / Olentangy) made the layup as time expired to give BW a 35-32 at halftime.  

In the third quarter the Blue Streaks regained the lead with a 7-2 run to take a 39-37 lead at the 8:14 mark when Spahar hit a jump shot. The Yellow Jackets regained a 44-41 lead with 5:10 left in the third period when senior guard Dehart knocked down a shot from behind the arc. BW outscored John Carroll 11-8 at the end of the third quarter to maintain a 55-48 lead going into the final quarter of regulation.

The Yellow Jackets started the fourth period with a 6-0 run when junior forward Sydney Clark (Parma / Lake Ridge Academy) sunk a three-pointer at the 7:20 mark to make the score 61-48. The Blue Streaks kept the game within reach going on a 7-0 run of their own to make the score 61-55 when Pryor made two free throws with 5:09 left in regulation. With 1:24 left in the quarter, junior guard Colombo made a big layup to give BW a 68-58 lead.  John Carroll outscored the Yellow Jackets 7-5 in the final two minutes of play, but BW held on for the victory.
