Women’s Basketball Loses OAC Game in Overtime at Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team was defeated, 82-72 in overtime, in an Ohio Athletic Conference against Otterbein University in the Rike Center.

BW (13-8, 9-5 OAC) splits the season series with Otterbein (11-10, 6-8 OAC). The last time Otterbein defeated BW was on January 26, 2013 in Westerville.

The Yellow Jackets had three players score in double figures led by junior guard Sydney Clark (Parma / Lake Ridge Academy) who posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) scored a team-high 12 points and sophomore guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/Fairview) scored 10 points. 

The Cardinals had five players score in double digits led by senior forward Amriah Huck who recorded a double-double scoring a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Dani Kissel scored 13 points, freshman guard Ali Cartnal  and sophomore guard Kiersten Taylor each scored 11 points, and sophomore guard Abby Miduri scored 10 points.

Otterbein started the game off on a 4-0 run when Huck made a jumper at the 8:35 mark. BW answered with a 5-0 run of their own to take a, 5-4, lead with 7:20 on the clock. The Cardinals answered with a 9-2 run to take a 13-7 lead and forcing the Yellow Jackets to take a timeout with 2:35 left in the quarter. Both teams made two free throws to close out the scoring in the first quarter giving Otterbein a 15-9.  

The Cardinals opened the second stanza on a 6-2 run to take a 21-11 lead at the 8:19 mark. The Yellow Jackets went on a 15-4 run to take a, 26-25, lead with 5:18 on the clock when freshman guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard / Davidson) hit a three-pointer. Both teams exchanged baskets back and forth to end the second quarter and the Yellow Jackets 35-34 lead at halftime. 

In the third quarter, Otterbein tied the game up 38-38 at the 8:12 mark, but BW went on a 9-2 to take a, 47-40, lead capped off by Fecht's made with 5:45 left in the third period. The Cardinals cut the Yellow Jackets lead to, 47-45, when Taylor made a jumper at the 4:30 mark.  BW answered with a 7-2 run making the score, 56-47, when senior forward Alissa Munro (Mansfield / Lexington) hit a shot from beyond the arc. BW outscored the Cardinals 5-2 when Clark  hit a free throw with four seconds left, but Miduri made a field goal as time expired to make the score 61-53 at the end of the third period.

Otterbein went on an 8-0 run in the final quarter of play when Huck made a layup to tie the game at, 61-61, at the 7:46 mark. The Yellow Jackets then went on a short 4-0 run to regain a 65-61 lead when Colombo made a layup with 5:45 left in the game. Otterbien ended regulation on a 6-2 run and Huck hit two big free throws with 16 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime tied at 67-67. 

In the first overtime the Cardinals outscored BW 8-2 to take a 75-69 lead when Cartnal made a jumper at the 2:43 mark. Otterbein finished the game on a 7-3 run to get the victory.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, February 10 when they host an OAC contest against cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m.   Fans can follow all of the action live at http://bit.ly/1X8Aoxb.
