OBERLIN, Ohio – The 25th-nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team was upset in the final seconds as Oberlin College posted a 63-61 conference victory in the Philips Gymnasium.
BW (2-2) had three players score in double figured led by junior forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) with a team-high 11 points. Junior point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) and sophomore forward Megan Schubert (Defiance/Ayersville) each contributed 10 points. The 10 points for Schubert marked a career-high.
Oberlin (3-2) had two players scored in double digits led by Tyler Parlor with a game-high 17 points. Lindsey Bernhardt tallied 15 points.
In the first quarter, the Yeowomen opened the game on a 5-2 run when Alex Stipano knocked down a three-pointer at the 8:14 mark. The Yellow Jackets responded 12-4 run to take a 14-9 lead on a layup by Schubert at 3:25. Oberlin closed the period with a 9-4 run but trailed by five points at 18-13.
BW opened the second stanza on a 10-4 run to extend its lead to 28-17 when Clark canned a three-pointer at the 6:02 mark. The Yeowomen used an 8-3 run to cut the lead down to 31-25 when Eleanor Van Burn hit a trey at 2:53 mark. Both teams scored four points apiece down the stretch with the Yellow Jackets leading 35-29 at the intermission.
BW opened the third quarter on a 10-6 run to push the lead to 10 points at 45-35 on a jumper by Clark at the 5:23 mark. Oberlin responded with a 7-2 run to cut the lead down to 47-42 when Bernhardt buried a triple at 3:10. The Yeowomen outscored the Jackets 5-4 down the stretch but trailed 51-47 after three periods.
Oberlin opened the final stanza of play with a 4-0 run to tie the game at 51-51 on layup by Parlor at the 8:04 mark. It was just the second tie of the game and the first since the game was tied 5-5 at 6:14 of the first quarter. BW answered with a 4-0 run to take a 55-51 lead on a pair of free throws by Schubert at the 7:14 mark.
The Yeowomen responded with a 5-0 lead to regain the lead at 56-55 on a layup by Parlor at 6:22. The Yellow Jackets continued the back and forth runs as they went on a 6-0 run to take a 61-56 lead on a layup by junior forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) at the 2:52 mark. Oberlin closed the game on a 7-0 run and hit the game winning shot with 1.2 seconds remaining as Bernhardt scored on a layup.
