Munro’s Buzzer Beater Gives Women’s Basketball Victory Against Mount Union in Overtime

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Senior forward Alissa Munro (Mansfield/Lexington) hit the game-winning shot as time expired in overtime to lead the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team to a 61-59 Ohio Athletic Conference victory at the University of Mount Union in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

BW (12-6, 8-3 OAC), who is now 2-0 in overtime games this season, won the season series and has won six of the last eight meetings against Mount Union (13-5, 7-4 OAC).

Munro, who scored a season-high, and junior point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) led four the Yellow Jackets in double figures led with 12 points.  Junior forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) and freshman forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) each tallied 10 points.  Womeldorf came off the bench to tie her career-high in points and grabbed a career-best and team-high six rebounds.

The Purple Raiders were led by senior All-OAC guard Annie Bova with a game-high 25 points.

In the first quarter the two teams battled back and forth through the first four and half minutes until Clark hit a jumper to give BW an 8-7 lead at the 5:28 mark, Mount Union outscored the Yellow Jackets 10-7 down the stretch and led 17-14 after the opening quarter.

BW opened the second period on a 6-3 run to take a 20-19 lead on jumper by senior guard Janaya Feaster (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) at 8:09.  The Purple Raiders responded with a 10-1 run to take a 29-21 lead on reverse layup by Bova at the 3:26 mark. The Yellow Jackets answered back with an 8-0 run to cut the lead down to 29-27 on a jumper by Colombo at 2:04.  Mount Union scored the final five points of the stanza and led 34-27 at the intermission.

The Yellow Jackets opened the third quarter on a 6-2 run to cut the lead down to 36-33 on a runner in the paint by junior forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) at the 7:02 mark.  The Purple Raiders answered with a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 43-33 when sophomore guard Casey Morrissette hit two of three from the foul line at 5:05.  BW came right back with a 10-0 run to tie the game at 43-43 on a layup by Womeldorf with 1:24 left.  Mount Union scored the final three points and led 46-43 after three quarters of play.

The Purple Raiders opened the final quarter on a 7-6 run to push its lead to 53-49 on a layup by freshman forward Renee DeFord at the 4:55 mark.  The Yellow Jackets answered with a 6-0 run to take a 55-53 lead when Colombo split a pair from the charity stripe with 1:54 remaining.  Mount Union hit a jumper down the stretch to force the game into overtime.

BW opened the extra session on a 4-0 run to take a 59-54 on a jumper by Clark at the 3:21 mark. The Purple Raiders came back with a 4-0 run of their own to tie the game at 59-59 on a layup by Bova with 19.8 seconds.  After a Yellow Jacket timeout that advanced the ball to the frontcourt, Munro took an entry pass into the paint and knocked down a six-footer as time expired for the victory.

BW is back in action on Saturday, January 30 when it travels to Marietta for an OAC game against Marietta College in the Ban Johnson Arena at 3 p.m.
