Women’s Basketball Drops First OAC Game to Marietta

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team dropped its first Ohio Athletic Conference game as it fell to Marietta College, 68-60, in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (5-3, 3-1 OAC), who snapped a three-game winning streak, had two players score in double figures led by junior forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge) with a game-high tying 12 points and a game-high tying seven rebounds.   Junior forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) added 10 points and a game-high tying seven rebounds.

Marietta (8-2, 2-2 OAC), who snapped an eight-game losing skid to the Yellow Jackets, had three players score in double digits led by sophomore guard Ashley Barker with a game-high tying 12 points.  Sophomore guard Brooke Borich and junior guard Morgan Liedtke each added 10 points.   Liedtke also grabbed a game-high tying seven rebounds. The last Pioneers' win came on December 3, 2011 when they posted a 70-64 victory in the Ban Johnson Arena.

BW jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when freshman forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center/Olentangy) converted the traditional three-point play just 40 seconds into the game.  Marietta responded with a 4-0 run to take a 4-3 lead on a layup by Corrie Burkhardt at the 5:35 mark.  The game was tied on two occasions with the last coming at 7-7 with 3:35 remaining in the opening quarter.  The Pioneers scored the final points of the period to lead 9-7 on a pair of free throws by Barker at the 1:53 mark.

The second quarter featured three ties in the opening minutes with the last coming at 16-16 on a three-pointer by Clark at 5:46.  Marietta used a 6-2 run to take a 22-16 when Borich split a pair from the charity stripe at the 4:26 mark.  The Yellow Jackets answered with a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to 22-20 on jumper by Clark at 3:55.  BW tied the game at 24-24 on a triple by Clark but the Pioneers hit a jumper at the buzzer to lead 26-24 at the intermission.

Marietta opened the third quarter on a 5-2 run to increase its lead to 31-26 on a three pointer by Jo Herd Middlebrooks at 8:38.  After a triple by Yellow Jacket senior guard Allyson Helleis (Rocky River) cut the lead down to 31-29, the Pioneers went on an 8-0 run to push its lead to a game-high 10 points at 39-29 on a put back by Burkhardt at the 4:59 mark.  BW responded with a 6-2 run to cut the lead down to 41-35 when senior guard Janaya Feaster (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) hit a pair of free throws at 3:08.  Marietta outscored the Yellow Jackets 5-3 down the stretch to lead 46-38 after three periods of play.

BW opened the final stanza on an 8-3 run to cut the lead down to 49-46 when senior forward Alissa Munro (Mansfield/Lexington) knocked down a three at the 7:17 mark.  The Pioneers outscored the Yellow Jackets 19-14 down the stretch.

BW plays its final contest before the Christmas Break on Saturday, December 19 when it travels to Wilmington for an OAC game against Wilmington College in the Fred Raizk Arena at 3 p.m.
