BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team dropped a 67-63 Ohio Athletic Conference game to OAC leader and No. 16-nationally ranked Ohio Northern University in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
BW (9-6, 5-3 OAC) had two players score in double figures led by senior guard Janaya Feaster(Akron/Archbishop Hoban) she scored team-high 16 points off the bench. Junior forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) tallied 12 points.
Ohio Northern (13-2, 8-0 OAC) had two players score in double digits led by sophomore Amy Bullimore, who was the OAC Freshman of the Year in 2014-15, as she recorded a double-double with a game-high 26 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. Senior forward Karissa Steffas contributed 12 points.
The Yellow Jackets took an early 6-4 lead in the first quarter when juniors Mackenzie Colombo(Strasburg) and Clark each knocked down a three-pointer with Clark's coming at the 8:03 mark. The Polar Bears responded with an 8-4 run to take a 12-10 lead on a layup by freshman guard Jenna Dirksen at 2:48. BW outscored Ohio Northern 5-4 the rest of the way but trailed 16-15 after one quarter of play.
The Yellow Jackets opened the second period on an 8-3 run to take a 23-18 lead on a trey by Feaster at the 7:11 mark. The Polar Bears responded with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 23-23 on a fast break layup by Steffas at 6:15. BW answered with an 11-2 run to take a 34-25 lead when Feaster buried a three-pointer at the 4:07 mark. Ohio Northern came back with a 7-2 run to cut the lead down to 36-32 on a put back by Bollimer at 2:05. The Polar Bears outscored the Yellow Jackets 3-2 down the stretch but trailed 38-35 at the intermission.
BW opened the second half and third quarter on a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 43-35 when senior guard Allyson Helleis (Rocky River) knocked down a triple at the 7:31 mark. The Yellow Jackets then used an 8-4 run to take a 51-41 lead on a trey by sophomore guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/Fairview) at 4:33. Ohio Northern responded with a 6-2 run to cut the lead down to 53-47 on a three-pointer by junior guard Angela Tesny at the 2:28 mark. Neither team scored the remainder of the period and BW led 53-47 after three quarters of play.
The Polar Bears opened the final quarter on a 9-3 run to tie the game at 56-56 on a layup by senior guard Brooke Espenschied at the 5:19 mark. Ohio Northern outscored BW 11-7 down the stretch to secure the win.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, January 27 when they close out the first half of the OAC schedule when they travel to University Heights to face cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7:30 p.m.
