Women’s Basketball Falls Against Capital in OAC Clash

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team was defeated by Capital University, 57-41, in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (8-5, 4-2 OAC) was led by junior forwatd Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) as she scored a team-high 12 points.  Junior forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Capital (11-2, 4-2 OAC), who snaps a three game losing skid against the Yellow Jackets, had two players score in double figures led by junior forward Colleen Fondessy with a game-high 19 points.  Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Nina Napolitano tallied 13 points.

In the first quarter, Capital went on a 5-0 run, but the Yellow Jackets came right back with a 4-0 run of their own putting them within one. BW and the Crusaders exchanged baskets back tying the game at 11-11 with 47 seconds left in the first period. Capital went on a late 5-0 run to end the first with a 16-11 lead on a Napolitano buzzer-beater.

In the second period, both teams exchanged three pointers making the score 19-14 at the 7:44 mark. Capital went on a 5-2 run on a Fondessy three-pointer, which forced the Yellow Jackets to take a timeout with 3:09 left in the second. A couple turnovers led to a 4-0 run for BW to cut the Crusaders lead to 24-20 before halftime.

In the third stanza, Simonne Gage hit a wide open three-pointer capping off a 5-0 Capital run forcing the Yellow Jackets to take an early timeout at the 8:05 mark. The Crusaders outscored BW 11-10 throughout the rest of the third period giving them a 40-30 lead going into the final period of play.

In the fourth quarter, Capital outscored BW 9-7 and held a 12 point lead at the 4:37 mark. The Crusaders outscored the Yellow Jackets 6-3 in the last four minutes to take the 57-41 victory.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, January 13 when they travel to Tiffin for an OAC game against Heidelberg University in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.   The next home game is Saturday, January 16 when BW hosts OAC leader Ohio Northern University at 3 p.m.
