BEREA, Ohio -- Senior guard Janya Feaster (Akron/Archbishop Hoban), junior forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) and sophomore guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park/Fairview) all scored career-highs as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 72-63, in its home opener in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

Sydney led the BW (1-0) trio with a team-high 19 points, Feaster tallied 18 points and Smith contributed 16 points. In addition, Feaster added a career-best eight steals. Case Western Reserve (0-2) was led by sophomore forward Kara Hageman with a game-high 26 points.

In the first quarter, BW scored the first seven points of the game and led 7-0 at 6:41 when Clark made a layup. The Spartans scored nine of the next 10 points to grab a 9-8 lead at 3:50 when Hageman canned her second three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets scored the final six points and led 14-9 after one period.

In the second quarter, after Case Western Reserve closed its deficit to 14-11 at 9:25, BW ran off seven straight points to take a 21-11 lead at 6:28 when Clark hit a short jumper along the right baseline. The lead grew to 13 at 26-13 at 3:37 when Feaster nailed a triple from the left wing. The Spartans ran off six straight points, including four by Hellman, to cut BW's lead to 26-19 at 1:05. The teams traded treys to end the stanza and BW led, 29-22, at halftime.

In the third quarter, Hageman canned another triple to bring Case Western Reserve within 31-25 at 9:16, but BW outscored the Spartans 17-7, including 12 points by Smith, to take a 48-32 lead at 4:50. The Spartans responded with eight straight points to make it 48-40 at 3:01 when freshman forward Hillary Hellman made a layup. After BW made it 50-40, the Spartans continued the push the Yellow Jackets and scored the final eight points of the quarter, including the last six by Hellman to trail 50-46.

In the fourth quarter, Case Western Reserve closed to two points at 50-48 at 9:45 on a Hageman jumper. Undaunted, BW outscored the Spartans  9-2 to rebuild a nine-point advantage at 59-50 when junior point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) made one of two foul shots. After the teams split 12 points, BW still led 65-56 with 2:37 left when Clark made a layup.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Friday, November 20 when BW travels to Anderson, Indiana to play in the Anderson University Tournament. BW plays Trine University of Indiana in its Friday game at 6 p.m. The next home game is on Wednesday, December 2 when BW hosts rival University of Mount Union in its Phio Athletic Conference opener at 7:30 p.m.
