Women’s Basketball Upset By Heidelberg in OAC Action

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team was defeated by Heidelberg University, 47-43, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (13-7, 9-4 OAC), who snapped a four game winning streak and split the season series with Heidelberg (9-11, 7-6 OAC) had two players score in double figures led by Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) with a game-high tying 12 points. Freshman guard Hannah Fecht (Hilliard/Davidson) tallied 11 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds. 

The Student Princes, who ended a 28-game losing skid to the Yellow Jackets dating back to January 20, 2014 had two players score in double digits led by Theresa Jackson with a game-high tying 12 points.  Senior All-OAC forward Carli Patrick recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The first quarter featured four ties with the last coming at 9-9 when Jackson made a pair of free throws at the 3:01 mark.  Neither team would score the remainder of the quarter.

In the second stanza, BW went on a 4-0 run to take a 13-9 lead when junior forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) made a jump shot with 4:02 left in the half. Heidelberg answered with a 4-0 run of their own to tie the game at 13-13 when Marisa Liburdi made two free throws at the 2:19 mark. Senior guard Ally Dehart (Beaver, Pa.) made a layup with 50 seconds left, but the Student Princes answered again when Jackson made a field goal with 36 seconds left to end the half tied 15-15.

The Yellow Jackets started off the second half on a 9-1 run to take a, 24-16, lead when Colombo netted both free throws at the 5:41 mark. The Student Princes cut the BW lead to three when Patrick hit both of her free throws with 4:34 left in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets ended the third quarter on a 5-1 run and held a 29-25 lead going into the final quarter.

In the final 10 minutes of play, BW extended its lead to six when Colombo hit a jumper at the 9:18 mark. Heidelberg came back as they have all game and tied the game at, 33-33 with 7:42 left in the game when Patrick hit a jumper. The Student Princes took the lead when Nicole Payne hit a two-point field goal at the 6:19 mark. The game was again tied at, 39-39, when senior guard Janaya Feaster (Akron/Arch Bishop Hoban) made her two free throws with 4:06 remaining. Heidelberg regained the lead and held a 43-42 lead with 52 seconds left in regulation. Payne made two free throws with 9 seconds left in regulation to seal the 47-43 victory for the Student Princes.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, February 6 when they travel to Westerville for an OAC game against Otterbein University in the Rike Center at 3 p.m.
