Women’s Basketball Holds Off Cross-Town Rival John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio—The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated cross-town and Ohio Athletic Conference rival John Carroll University, 63-56, inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

BW (10-6, 6-3 OAC) defeated John Carroll for the second straight game after beating them in the OAC semifinals a year ago and had two players in double figures. Junior guard Sydney Clark (Parma / Lake Ridge Academy) scored a team-high 12 points and tallied up four assists. Junior guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) tallied up 11 points for the Yellow Jackets.

John Carroll (9-7, 4-5 OAC) was led by Shmoo Pryor who had a game-high 17 points and four assists. Sarah Cairnie and Katlyn Spahar were also in double-figures with 10 points each.  
 
In the first quarter the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 10-2 lead when sophomore guard Katie Smith (Fairview Park / Fairview) hit her second three-pointer of the game at the 6:44 mark.  BW extended its lead to 19-6 with 3:28 minutes left in the opening quarter when freshman forward Rachel Womeldorf (Lewis Center / Olentangy) hit a jumper. The Blue Streaks cut the Yellow Jackets lead to nine when Karin Spear laid the ball in to make it 19-10, but the BW ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to lead 23-10 at the end of the first quarter. 

In the five minutes of the second period John Carroll outscored the Yellow Jackets 6-5 when Bri Pittenger hit her second field goal of the game to make the score 28-16. The Blue Streaks outscored BW 7-4 in last five minutes of the first half giving the Yellow Jackets a 33-24 lead at halftime.

John Carroll started the second half on a 12-5 run when Katie Battaglia hit a shot from behind the arc making the score 38-36 at the 5:26 mark. BW responded with a 6-2 run of its own when senior guard Ally Dehart (Beaver, Pa.) knocked down two free-throws to make the score 44-38 at the 3:32 left in the third. The Blue streaks cut the Yellow Jackets lead to one, but as time expired in the third quarter Clark hit a three pointer to make the score 48-44 at end of the third quarter.
 
In the final period John Carroll went on a 5-0 lead to gain a 49-48 lead when Madi Steiner made a jumper at the 8:57 mark. BW went on a 5-0 run of its own to regain the lead and make the score 53-49 with 8:01 left in the regulation. The Yellow Jackets extended there lead to five when Colombo hit a jumper to make it 57-52 with 3:25 left on the clock. The Blue Streaks cut the BW lead to three when Pryor knocked down two free-throws making the score 59-56. Clark and Colombo each tacked on two free-throws in the last two minutes to secure the victory.

The Yellow Jackets host Muskingum University on Saturday, January 23 in the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 2 p.m.
