BW Women’s Basketball Tripped Up in OAC Opener

ALLIANCE, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team fell in its Ohio Athletic Conference opener to the University of Mount Union by a final score of 68-59 in the Timken Gymnasium.

BW (3-2, 0-1 OAC) was led by senior guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) with 11 points. Junior guard Janaya Feaster (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) and senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) each had 10 points. The 10 points for Feaster was a career-high tying effort.  In addition, sophomore forward Clara Lemmon (Louisville) had a career night as she tied her career-best in poinst with nine and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.
Mount Union (3-2, 1-0 OAC) was led by junior guard Annie Bova with a game-high 18 points.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when junior guard Allyson Helleis (Rocky River) split a pair of free throws at 16:50. The Purple Raiders responded with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 9-9 on three-pointer by freshman guard Paiten Strother at the 13:44 mark. BW then went on a 4-0 run to take a 13-9 lead on a pair of free throws by junior guard She'Kiera Brooks (Stow/Woodbridge) at 12:29.  

Mount Union then answered with an 11-2 run to take a five point at 20-15 lead on a three-pointer by senior point guard Nancy Osborne at 6:15. The Yellow Jackets trailed the remainder of the half and cut the lead down to two points on two occasions with the last coming at 27-25 on a jumper by sophomore forward Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) at the 2:45 mark. The Purple Raiders scored four of the last six points of the half to lead 31-27 at the intermission.

In the second half, Mount Union opened the second half on an 8-0 run to take a 37-27 lead on a layup by Bova at the 17:47 mark. BW responded with a 14-5 run to cut the lead down to one at 42-41 on a traditional three-point play by junior guard Erin Allen (Girard, Pa.) at 12:47.  

The Purple Raiders answered with an 8-3 run to take a 50-44 lead on another Bova layup at the 9:42 mark. The Yellow Jackets once again cut the lead down to one at 54-53 on a pair of free throws by Feaster at 7:09.   MountUnion ended the game on a 14-6 run to secure the victory.

BW is back in action on Saturday, December 6 when it travels to Westerville for an OAC game against Otterbein University in the Rike Center at 3 p.m.
