BW Women’s Basketball Outlasts Wilmington for Key OAC Win

WILMINGTON, Ohio – Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) scored a game-high 19 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Wilmington College, 65-62, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Hermann Court inside the at Fred Raizk Arena.

Smolik, who now has 993 career points, is just five points shy of becoming the 14th member of the Yellow Jacket 1,000-point club.  She needs eight points to move past Kim Luthman (1997-2001) into 13th place and is 21 points shy of 12th place.

In addition to Smolik for BW (18-5, 13-3 OAC), who senior All-OAC guard Shari Manags (Leipsic) scored 17 points and sophomore guard Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) added 11.

Wilmington (13-10, 8-8 OAC) was led by senior guard Courtney Tucker and sophomore forward Mary Moyer each had a double-double.   Tucker scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Moyer had 12 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Quakers opened the game on a 7-4 run on a pair of free throws by senior forward Kristin Glick at the 17:32 mark.   The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 7-7 on a three-pointer by Mangas at 17:14.   Wilmington used a 6-2 run to take a 13-9 lead on a trey by Tucker at the 12:09 mark.  BW tied the game at 13-13 on a layup by Smolik at 11:11.

The game was tied on six more occasions over the remainder of the first half with the last coming at 29-29 on a pair of free throws by Smolik with three seconds left in the stanza.  The largest lead for either team was only three points over that span.

The Quakers opened the second half on a 8-4 run to take a 37-33 lead on layup by Brittany Jefferson at the 14:37 mark. The Yellow Jackets fought back with an 8-0 run to take a 41-37 lead on a four-point play by junior guard Ally Dehart (Beaver, Pa.) at 12:23.   Dehart knocked down the three-pointer then converted the foul shot.

BW went on a 12-7 run to push its lead to nine points at 51-44 on a layup by sophomore forward Clara Lemmon (Canton/Louisville) at the 6:53 mark.  Wilmington cut the lead down to 57-54 on a pair of trey by sophomore guard Brittaney Jefferson at 3:41.

The Quakers cut the lead down to one point at 63-62 on a three-pointer by Moyer with two seconds left.   The Yellow Jackets sealed the game at 65-62 when sophomore guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) knocked down a pair of key free throws with one second left.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, February 18 when it hosts OAC-leader Ohio Northern University in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.   The final regular season and OAC game is on Saturday, February 21 when the team hosts Capital University on Seniors' Day in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 3 p.m.
