BW Women’s Basketball Falls Short at Cross-Town Rival John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team falls short in Ohio Athletic Conference action against cross-town rival John Carroll University, 75-72,  in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center

BW (17-5, 12-3 OAC) snapped a five-game winning streak and fell into a second-place tie with John Carroll (19-3, 12-3 OAC).  The Yellow Jackets and Blue Streaks trail Ohio Northern University by one game in the OAC Standings as Polar Bears stand atop the standings after their 60-51 victory tonight against Heidelberg University.

BW was led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Audrey Smolik(Strongsville) who recorded her seventh career double-double as she scored a career-high tying and game-best 22 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.  Sophomore guard Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) recorded a career-high 16 points and senior All-OAC guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) added 11.

John Carroll was led by senior guard Beth Switzler and sophomore All-OAC guard Katlyn Spahar as each recorded a double-double.   Switzler scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds while Spahar tallied 19 points and grabbed 11 boards.  Senior guard Emily Taylor added 11 points.

The Blue Streaks opened the game on a 7-2 run on a layup by Switzler at the 18:02 mark.  The Yellow Jackets answered with a 7-2 run to tie the game at 9-9 on a layup by Clark but she missed the foul shot to convert the three-point play at 15:10.   The game would be tied on two more occasions with the last coming at 13-13 before John Carroll went on an 10-2 run to take a 23-15 lead on a layup by Switzler at the 8:04.

BW used a 15-6 run to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the game at 30-29 on a three-pointer by Smolik at 2:13.   Sophomore guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) converted a pair of free throws with 36 seconds remaining in the first half to score the final points and gave BW a 32-29 lead at the intermission.

The Blue Streaks opened the second half on a 16-6 run to take a 45-38 lead on a on a layup by freshman guard Shmoo Pryor at 15:10.    John Carroll went on an 11-6 run to take a 56-44 lead on a triple by Taylor at the 11:17 mark.  

The Yellow Jackets responded with a 10-6 run to cut the lead down to 62-54 on a three-pointer by Mangas at 7:10.  BW stormed back with an 11-7 run to cut the lead down to 69-65 on a pair of free throws by Colombo at the 2:17 mark.

The Yellow Jackets cut the lead down to two points at 72-70 on a layup by Clark with 26 seconds remaining.  The Blue Streaks pushed the lead to 73-70 when Switzler split a pair from the charity stripe with 22 seconds left.   BW answered back to cut the lead down to 73-71 when Mangas split a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left.   John Carroll again went up four at 75-71 when Spahar knocked down from the foul line.  The Yellow Jackets scored the final points of the game at 75-72 when Smolik split a pair of free throws with two seconds left.

BW  is back in action this Saturday, February 14 when it travels to Wilmington for its final regular season road game against Wilmington College on Hermann Court inside the at Fred Raizk Arena at 3 p.m.   The next home game is on Wednesday, February 18 when the team hosts OAC-leader Ohio Northern University for an OAC game on "Swarm the Gym Night" in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
