Smolik’s 6th Career Double-Double Leads BW Women’s Basketball Past Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio –  Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard/forward Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) recorded her sixth career double-double as she scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed a game and career-high tying 11 rebounds as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Muskingum University, 60-54, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Performance Court in the Muskingum Recreation Center. 

BW (13-4, 7-3 OAC), who has now won 11 straight  and 12 of the last 13 meetings versus the Fighting Muskies.  Muskingum (3-14, 1-9 OAC) has now lost 10 straight games and 11 of the last 12.  

Also scoring in double figures for the Yellow Jackets, senior All-OAC guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) tallied 11 points, including shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line.  Sophomore guard Sydney Clark (Parma/Lake Ridge Academy) added 10 points. 

The Fighting Muskies were led by sophomore forward Mallory Taylor with a team-high 13 points. 

Muskingum opened the game on a 6-2 run on a jumper by junior guard Angela Darnley at the 16:29 mark. BW responded with a 7-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 9-8 on a three-pointer by junior forward Alissa Munro (Mansfield/Lexington) at 12:57. The game was tied on two occasions with the last coming at 14:14 then the Fighting Muskies outscored the Yellow Jackets 12-11 down the stretch to trail 26-25 at the intermission.   

BW opened the second half on a 9-5 run to regain the lead at 34-31 on a triple by Clark at the 14:43 mark. The Yellow Jackets did not look back as it pushed the lead to 54-45 on a three-pointer by Smolik at the 2:37 mark.  Muskingum cut the lead down to one point at 41-40 when sophomore forward Jasmine Goings split a pair of free throws at 8:24.   The Yellow Jackets pulled away and did not look back as they outscored the Fighting Muskies 20-14 down the stretch and pushed their lead to as many as 10 points on two occasions with the last coming at 56-46 when Mangas knocked down two from the charity stripe with 56 seconds remaining.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, January 28 when the team looks to avenge an early OAC season loss to the University of Mount Union in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets then host an OAC game on Saturday, January 31 against Marietta College at 3 p.m.
