GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) scored 25 points and senior All-OAC guard Shari Mangas (Leipsic) scored 17, but the visiting Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team lost 80-66 to undefeated and host Calvin (Mich.) College in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division III National Tournament in the Spoelstrom Center.  The Yellow Jackets end their season at 22-7 overall and Calvin (28-0) advances to play the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (23-6) in the second round tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.

BW was making its 13th appearance in the NCAA national tourney under the direction of 25-year veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer, now 510-186 in her career. It was another great season for Harrer and her Yellow Jackets, who won the OAC Tournament title after being picked to fnish third by the OAC Coaches in their preseason poll.

"I am so proud of our kids," said Harrer in the postgame press conference. "They battled out there. They got down early and fought back."

The difference in the game were three things, scoring runs, foul shots and Calvin sophomore forward Ann Timmer, the daughter of former BW assistant men's basketball and baseball coach Dr. Jim Timmer, who now works at Calvin. Calvin had one more run than the Yellow Jackets, and made 19 of 25 foul shots compared to just 5 of 9 for BW. Timmer came off the bench to score 16 points and twice stop BW runs.

Smolik and Mangas combined to can 10 of BW's 11 three-pointers, including five by each outstanding senior student-athlete. Smolik, who is a three-time Academic All-OAC student-athlete and a 2015 CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 player, carries a 3.88 grade average in education. With her 25 points tonight, Smolik ends her career tenth on BW's all-time scoring list with 1,090 career points. Mangas, also Academic All-OAC, carries a 3.47 grade average in sport management.  The duo played their hearts out in this game, and it showed their excellent senior leadership.

"You couldn't ask any more out of our two seniors with the way in which they played tonight," said Harrer. "They both went out with great games.  They left it all out on the floor."

In addition to Smolik and Mangas, sophomore All-OAC forward Clara Lemmon (Louisville) had seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds and sophomore All-OAC guard/ forward Sydney Clark (Parma/ Lake Ridge Academy) had six points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Junior guard Janaya Feaster (Akron/ Archbishop Hoban) came off the bench to make a career-high sis steals and passed for three assists.

In addition to Timmer, Calvin was led by senior forwards Hannah Acre with 22 points and Brenna Verkaik with 19 and six rebounds.

"You have to give Calvin credit," said Harrer. "They ares a good team for a reason. They are 28-0."  

In the first half, Calvin jumped out to an early, 12-0 at 16:29 when Acre made a layup. The Yellow Jackets came right back and scored the next seven points to cut the deficit to 12-7 at 14:29 when Smolik made a driving jumper in the lane.

Twice BW cut Calvin's lead to two points with the last at 19-17 at 9:41 when Mangas made a three-pointer. Calvin came right back and scored 12 straight points to take the first of two 14-point leads at 31-17 at 4:54 when Timmer made a layup. Calvin also led at halftime, 40-24.

In the second half, BW scored the first 17 points to take its first lead of the game at 41-40 at 13:39 when Mangas canned a triple. The lead increased to 46-43 at 12:16 when Smolik nailed her third trey of the game. BW's last lead was 49-47 when Smolik made another three-pointer.

Calvin scored the next 12 points to build a 10-point bulge at 59-49 at 7:56 when Timmer made two foul shots. The Yellow Jackets cut the Knight lead to six points on three separate occasions, with the last at 66-60 when Lemmon launched a triple at 5:11. Calvin regained its double-digit advantage at 70-60 with 4:13 left when senior guard Kayla Engelhard made both ends of a one-and-one foul shooting situation. Twice BW cut the lead to seven points but could get no closer.
