BW Women Win at Marietta, 73-62; Colombo Scores Career-High 16

MARIETTA, OHIO --  Sophomore point guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) scored a career-high 16 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team beat Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 73-62, in an OAC game in the Ban Johnson Arena. The win was BW's third straight this season and its 10th consecutive triumph versus the Pioneers.


The key to the BW victory was outscoring the Pioneers 47-31 in the second half and erasing a five-point halftime deficit.

In addition for BW (6-2, 3-1 OAC), sophomore guard Alissa Munro (Mansfield/ Lexington) came off the bench to make three three-pointers and score 15 points, senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/ forward Audrey Smolik (Strongsville) had the fourth double-double of her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore guard Sydney Clark (Parma/ Lake Risge Academy) had 12 points points. Marietta (4-5, 1-3 OAC) was led by senior forward Heather Booth's 14 points.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets grabbed a 4-0 lead at the 19:25 mark when sophomore guard Sydney Clark (Parma/ Lake Ridge Academy) made two foul shots. That would be BW's last lead of the stanza. The Pioneers took the lead at 6-4 at 17:53 outscored the Jackets 22-11 to build the first of two seven-point advantages at 22-15 with 7:22 left. BW cut the lead to one point on two occassions with the last at 25-24 at 2:24 when Smolik made a driving bank shot off the glass. Marietta scored sx of the last eight markers and led 31-26 at halftime.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets scored the first four points by sophomore guard Mackenzie Colombo (Strasburg) to close to 31-30 at 19:23 and finally tied the game at 33-33 at 18:19 on another Colombo hoop and at 35-35 at 17:37 when Smolik made a layup. The Jackets outscored the Pioneers 26-9 and built their largest loead at 17 points with a 61-44 lead at 8:47 left when Colombo made a jumper.

Marietta stormed back and went on a 14-2 run, including a 10-0 streak, to close to 63-58 at 2:44. After MC closed to 65-60 at 1:52 a Munro jumper at 1:37 and a Colombo foul shot with 39 seconds left restored an eight-point lead at 68-60. That was as close as the Pioneers would get to the Yellow Jackets.

The BW women return to action on Saturday, December 20 when the Yellow Jackets host Wilmington College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center at 3 p.m.
