Baseball Drops a Pair to Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team dropped a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games to Ohio Northern University on Wander Field.

Ohio Northern (14-13, 13-10 OAC) won the first game by a final score 7-1 and took the second game in seven innings by final score of 17-4.

In game one, BW (14-12-1, 13-9-1 OAC)  scored one runs on five hits as it plated its lone run in the sixth inning.   The Polar Bears scored seven runs on 10 hits as it pushed four runs across the plate in the first, one run in the second, sixth and seventh innings. 

The Yellow Jackets were led at the plate by junior right fielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills / Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) as he went 2-for-4 with a double.

On the mound,  freshman right hander Drew Schaly (Ashland) suffered the loss as he allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits with a strikeout and walk in one inning pitched. Freshman righty Brendon Hink (Poland /Neshannock {Pa.}) allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 innings.  Freshman right hander Kyle Maruna (Medina) allowed two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 2.1 innings pitched.  Senior lefty Spencer Berg (New Albany) pitched one scoreless and hitless inning while surrendering one walk.

In game two,  BW scored four runs on nine hits as it plated one run in the second, two in the third off the homer by senior All-American center fielder Dudley Taw (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) and one in the fourth.   Ohio Northern scored 17 runs on 19 hits as it pushed four runs across the plate in the third, five in the fourth and eight in the fifth.

Taw led the Yellow Jacket offense as he went 3-for-3 with a home run, one run scored and three runs batted-in (RBIs).  Sophomore third baseman Chris Viamonte (Naples, Fla. / Lely) was 2-for-2 with a doble and an RBI.

On the mound, Wilson took the loss as he allowed eight runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings.  Sophomore left hander Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa. /North Allegheny) allowed one unearned run on two hits in a third of an inning.  Freshman righty Trevor Leighty (Wooster) allowed four runs on four hits and did not record an out.  Freshman right hander Anthony Monaco III (Struthers) allowed four runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout and walk. Junior righty Clay Anderson (Garfield Heights/Trinity) did not allow a run on one hot in one-third  of an inning. Freshman right hander Alex Nadai, Jr. (Louisville, Ky. /DuPont Manual) pitched one inning and did not allow a run on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk.

BW is back in action on Saturday, May 1 when it travels to Bexley for an OAC doubleheader against Capital University at Clowson Field at 1 p.m.
