Baseball Drops Two Close Games to John Carroll

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team opened the 2021 season as it dropped a pair of close nine inning games to crosstown rival John Carroll University on Fisher Field.

John Carroll (2-0), who served as the home team in both games, won the first game by a score of 4-3 and took the nightcap by a final of 6-4.   The Blue Streaks were scheduled to play on their home field of Schweickert Field but were unable to due to field conditions.

In game one, BW (0-2) scored four runs on three runs on six hits as it plated all three runs in the fourth inning. John Carroll scored four runs on eight hits as it scored one run in the second, two in the seventh and the game winner in the bottom of the ninth.

The Yellow Jacket offense got a base knock from six players, including a double and run batted-in from sophomore first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen).

On the mound, sophomore right hander Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind) pitched six innings and allowed one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in a no decision.  Senior Scott Kirchhoff (Toledo/Sylvania Northview) pitched one-third of an inning and allowed two runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.  Junior Garret McLeod (Medina) pitched two-thirds of inning and did not allow a hit.  Senior Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) took the loss as he pitched the final inning and allowed one run on two hits.

In game two, BW scored five runs on seven hits as it plated two runs in second, two in the sixth and one in the eighth.  The Blue Streaks scored six runs on 11 hits as it pushed four runs across the plate in the third, one in the fourth and one in the sixth.

The Yellow Jackets were led by junior transfer first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla. /The Sagemont School) as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored, two runs batted-in and two walks.  Sophomore outfielder Bryce Holt (Richfield/Revere) as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a walk.

On the mound, sophomore right hander Ethan Boyko (North Royalton) pitched 2.2 innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks.  Junior Clay Anderson (Garfield Heights/Trinity) pitched two-third of innings and allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout.   Senior Jeremy McClure (Mentor) pitched the final 4.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts. 

BW is back in action on Sunday, March 13 when it closes out its home-and-home non-conference weekend series with John Carroll on Fisher Field at 12:30 p.m.
