Baseball Ties One and Drops Another to Crosstown Rival John Carroll

BEREA, Ohio –  In a rivalry game that featured a tie and a 12-inning affair, the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team tied one and lost another game in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against crosstown rival John Carroll University on Fisher Field. 

John Carroll (9-7-1, 6-6-1 OAC) won the first game by a final score of 7-4.  BW (11-6-1, 10-3-1) and the Blue Streaks played to an 11-11 tie when the game as called due to darkness in 12 innings.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored four runs on eight hits as it plated one run in the third and three in the fourth, which tied the game at 4-4.  The Blue Streaks scored seven runs on six hits as it pushed two runs across the plate in the second and fourth innings, one in the fifth and two in the seventh.

At the plate, BW was led by junior left fielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills / Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) as he went 3-for-4 with a double.  Senior All-American designated hitter Dudley Taw (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) and senior second base man Tony LoParo (Avon/Elyria Catholic) each went 2-for-4 while Taw added and run batted-in (RBI.)

On the mound, sophomore right hander Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) got the start and the no decision as he allowed four runs on three hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in four innings pitched.  Junior righty Garret McLeod (Medina) took the loss as he allowed three runs on two hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 2.2 innings pitched. Junior right hander Maxwell Cebulak (Oakmont, Pa. /Pittsburgh Central Catholic) pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit with five strikeouts.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored 11 runs on 18 hits as they plated one run in the first, three in the third, including two on the home run by LoParo, one in the fourth and five in the eighth, including three on the triple by sophomore left fielder Bryce Holt (Richfield/Revere) and one in the ninth. John Carroll scored 11 runs on 17x hits as it pushed two runs across the plate in the first, two in the second, one in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth. 

BW was led at the plate by junior Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla. /The Sagemont School) as he went 5-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Ludwick went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two walks.  LoParo was 2-for-6 with a double, homerun, two runs scored, three RBIs and a walk.  Junior catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Hills) was 2-for-3 with a RBI and walk. Sophomore catcher Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. 

On the mound, Wilson got the start and the no decision as he allowed four runs on four hits with one walk in two innings pitched.  Sophomore left hander Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout and one walk in three innings pitched.  Sophomore righty Ethan Boyko (North Royalton) did not record an out as he allowed two runs on two hits.  Senior Academic All-OAC right hander Scott Kirchhoff (Toledo / Sylvania Northview) allowed two runs on four hits with one strikeout in 2.1 innings pitched.  Freshman right Trevor Leighty (Wooster) pitched two-thirds of an inning and did not allow a run or hit with one strikeout.  Ludwick, who moved from shortstop, pitched the final three innings and allowed two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

The Yellow Jackets close out their weekend series with John Carroll on Sunday, April 11 when they travel to University Heights for an OAC doubleheader on Schweickert Field at 1 p.m.
