Baseball Opens Weekend Series with Sweep of Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team opened its weekend home-and-home series with Capital University by sweeping a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games on Clowson Field.

BW (16-12-1, 15-9-1 OAC) won the first game by a final score of 11-4.  The Yellow Jackets completed the sweep by taking the second game by a final score of 14-0 in seven innings

In game one, BW scored 11 runs on 13 hits as it plated two runs in the second, four in the third, one in the seventh and four in the ninth.  Capital (4-24, 3-22 OAC) scored four runs on nine hits as it pushed all four runs across the plate in the fifth.

At the plate the Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore designated hitter Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) as he went 4-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three runs batted-in (RBIs).  Junior first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.  Sophomore third baseman Chris Viamonte (Naples, Fla. / Lely) went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

On the mound, sophomore right hander Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) picked up his first win of the season as he allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks.  Sophomore righty Matt Sabin (Mentor) pitched the final four innings and did not allow a run on one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, BW scored 14 runs on 16 hits as it plated three runs in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and five in the seventh.  The Crusaders were held scoreless on four hits.

The Yellow Jacket offense was keyed by senior All-American center fielder Dudley Taw (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and five RBIs.  Castillo was 3-for-5 with a run scored.  Senior All-OAC short stop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) went 2-for-5 with one run scored and two RBIs.  Junior left fielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills / Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Vonderhaar went 2-for-5 with a homerun, two runs scored and three RBIs.

On the mound, freshman right hander Gordon Seger (Rome /Grand Valley) got his third win of the season as he did not allow a run on four hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings.

BW closes out its weekend series with Capital on Sunday, May 2 when it hosts the OAC doubleheader on Fisher Field at 1 p.m.
