Baseball Sweeps OAC Doubleheader with Muskingum to Close Regular Season

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Muskingum University to close the regular season on Mose Morehead Field .

BW (23-15-1, 22-12-1 OAC) won the first game by a final score of 9-8.  The Yellow Jackets took the second game by a final score of 13-11.

In game one, BW scored nine runs on 10 hits as it plated one run in the third, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the eighth.  Muskingum (7-23-1, 7-22-1) scored eight runs on 12 hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the third, three in the fourth and four in the sixth.

The Yellow Jackets were led at the plate senior second shortstop Tony LoParo (Avon/Elyria Catholic) as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted-in. Junior outfielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) was 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI.

On the mound, senior Academic All-OAC right hander Scott Kirchhoff (Toledo/Sylvania Northview) got the start and the no decision as he allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in four innings.  Sophomore lefty Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts.  Freshman right hander Kyle Maruna (Medina) picked up the win as he allowed one unearned run on one hit with three strikeouts and three walks in 1.2 innings. Sophomore righty Matt Sabin (Mentor) did not record an out and allowed one hit. Sophomore right hander Ethan Boyko (North Royalton) pitched one inning and allowed one hit with a strikeout and a walk.  Senior All-OAC third baseman Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) moved to the mound and picked up his first save of the season as he allowed one hit in one inning pitched. 

In game two, BW scored 13 runs on 17 hits as it plated two runs in the first, one in the third, fourth in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the seventh, one in the eighth and one in the ninth.  The Fighting Muskies scored 11 runs on 19 hits as they pushed two runs across the plate in the second, three in the fifth, two in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth and one in the ninth.

The Yellow Jackets were led at the plate by junior Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) as he went 3-for-6 with a double, run scored and two RBIs. Wilson was 3-for-6 with a double, homerun, two runs scored and two RBIs.  Sophomore designated hitter Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs.  Senior left fielder Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) went 2-for-4 with a double and two run scored. LoParo was 2-for-4 with a run scored.   Sophomore third baseman Chris Viamonte (Naples, Fla./Lely) was 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs.

On the bump, senior left hander Spencer Berg (New Albany) picked up his first win of the season as he allowed five runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts on four innings.  Freshman righty Anthony Monaco III (Struthers) allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts on two innings.  Freshman right hander Drew Schaly (Ashland) allowed four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks on 2.2 innings.  Junior right hander Clay Anderson (Garfield Heights/Trinity) picked up the save as he allowed no runs or hits in a third of an inning.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, May 19 when it hosts Heidelberg University on an OAC Tournament game on Fisher Field at 4 p.m.
