Baseball Sweeps Muskingum on Seniors’ Day

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference and Seniors' Day doubleheader over Muskingum University on Fisher Field

BW (21-15-1, 20-12-1 OAC) won the first game by a score of 12-1 in seven innings.  The Yellow Jackets took the second game by a final score of 11-1 in seven innings.

In game one, BW scored 12 runs on 12 hits as it plated two runs in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth and five in the sixth, including four on the two-run home runs by senior All-OAC shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) and senior left fielder Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban).  Muskingum (7-21-1, 7-19-1 OAC) scored one run on one hit as it pushed its lone run across the plate in the seventh.

The Yellow Jackets were led at the plate by junior first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) as he went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and a run batted-in.  Sophomore designated hitter Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and 4 RBIs. Ludwick went 2-for-4 with a home run, four runs scored and two RBIs. Bonner was 2-for-4 with a homer, run scored and two RBIs. Junior right fielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) went 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBIs. 

On the mound, freshman right hander Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) was perfect for 6.2 innings before allowing a hit.  Seger, who earned his fourth win of the season, allowed one run on one hit with five strikeouts.  Sophomore righty Ethan Boyko (North Royalton) pitched the final and did not allow a run and hit. 

In game two, BW scored 11 runs on 10 hits as it plated two runs in the second, one in the third, five in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.  The Fighting Muskies scored one run on five hits as they pushed their lone run across the plate in the seventh. 

The Yellow Jackets were led at the plate by Wilson as he went 2-for-4 with two doubles, run scored and 4 RBIs.  Ludwick was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Senior second baseman Tony LoParo (Avon/Elyria Catholic) went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs.

On the bump, Wilson picked up the win as he allowed no runs on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Freshman right hander Brendon Hink (Poland /Neshannock {Pa.}) pitched the final two innings and allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout.

BW is back in action on Sunday, May 16 as it travels to New Concord to close out its regular season portion of its schedule with an OAC doubleheader against Muskingum on Mose Morehead Field at 1 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets will open up OAC Tournament action on Wednesday, May 19 with a quarterfinal game at 4 p.m.
