Baseball Splits with John Carroll in Weekend Finale

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio –  The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team tied one and lost another game in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against crosstown rival John Carroll University on Schweickert Field.

BW (12-7-1, 11-4-1) won the first game by a final score of 13-9. John Carroll (10-8-1, 7-7-1 OAC) took the night cap by a final score of 15-11 in six innings as the game was called due to darkness.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored 13 runs on 14 hits as they plated one run in the first inning off the solo blast from senior All-American designated hitter Dudley Taw (Sheffield Lake/Brookside), one in the third, two in the sixth, five in the seventh and two in the eighth and ninth innings.  The Blue Streaks scored nine runs on 11 hits as they pushed two runs across the plate in the second, four in the third, two in the seventh and one in the ninth. 

At the plate, BW was led by senior second base man Tony LoParo (Avon/Elyria Catholic) as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two walks.  Junior first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla. /The Sagemont School) was 2-for-5 with one run scored, two runs batted-in (RBIs) and one walk.  Senior All-OAC shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) went 2-for-6 with a triple, run scored and an RBI.  Sophomore third baseman Chris Viamonte (Naples, Fla. / Lely) was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk.

On the mound, freshman right hander Brendon Hink (Poland/Neshannock {Pa.}) got the start and got the no decision as he allowed six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 2.1 innings. Freshman righty Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) won his first collegiate game as he allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings pitched. Sophomore right hander Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) picked up his first career save as he allowed one run on one hit with six strikeouts in 2.2 inning pitched.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored 11 runs on 13 hits as they plated two runs in the first, two in the second on the two-run blast by Ludwick, one in the fourth, four in the fourth and two in the sixth, including one on the solo shot by sophomore first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen). John Carroll scored 15 runs on 14 hits as it pushed 10 runs across the plate in the first, two in the fourth and three in the sixth.

BW was led at the plate by Ludwick as he went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs.   Castillo went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.  Vonderhaar was 2-for-3 with a double, homerun, one run scored and two RBIs.  LoParo went 2-for-3 with three runs scored two RBIs and a walk.

On the mound, freshman right hander Kyle Maruna (Brunswick) suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs on six hits with one walk in a third of an inning pitched.  Senior lefty Spencer Berg (New Albany) pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on one hit with two walks.  Sophomore right hander Ethan Boyko (North Royalton) allowed no runs on one hit in an inning.  Junior righty Clay Anderson (Garfield Heights/Trinity) gave up two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings pitched.  Sophomore right hander Justin Sekerak (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) allowed here runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 1.1 innings.  Freshman righty Alex Nadai, Jr. (Louisville, Ky. /DuPont Manual) faced one batter a gave up a walk.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, April 17 when it travels to Marietta for an OAC doubleheader against OAC leader Marietta College in Don Schaly Stadium at 1 p.m.
