Baseball Sweeps Capital for Second Straight Day

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader over Capital University for the second straight day on Fisher Field

BW (18-12-1, 17-9-1 OAC) won the first game by a final score of 8-4.  The Yellow Jackets completed the sweep by taking the second game by a final score of 17-8.

In game one, BW scored eight runs on 12 hits as it plated two runs in the second, two in the second and third and four in the eighth.  Capital (4-25, 3-24 OAC) scored four runs on 10 hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the ninth.

At the plate the Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore third baseman Chris Viamonte (Naples, Fla. / Lely) as he wen 2-for-4 with two homeruns, two runs scored and three runs batted-in (RBIs).  Senior All-American center fielder Dudley Taw (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) was 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and two stolen bases.  Junior first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.  Senior All-OAC short stop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two stolen bases.

On the mound, sophomore right hander Ethan Boyko (North Royalton) won his third game as he did not allow a run on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks in two innings.  Senior Academic All-OAC righty Scott Kirchhoff (Toledo/Sylvania Northview) allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout in three innings pitched.  Freshman right hander Brendon Hink (Poland / Neshannock {Pa.}) allowed on two runs on three hits in a third of an inning. Sophomore lefty Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) pitched two-thirds of an inning and did not allow a run or hit with a strikeout and walk.  Junior right hander Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills / Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) pitched the final three innings after moving from left field and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, BW scored 17 runs on 13 hits as it plated one run in the first, two in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth, three in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth.   The Crusaders scored eight runs on five hits as it pushed two runs across the plate in the first, second and third innings, one in the fourth and one in the seventh. 

The Yellow Jacket offense was senior second baseman Tony LoParo (Avon/Elyria Catholic) as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored and for runs batted-in.  Sophomore designated hitter Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.  Castillo went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, RBI and walk.  Junior outfielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills / Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

On the mound,  freshman righty Kyle Maruna (Medina) got the start and the no decision as he allowed four runs on one hit with two strikeouts and three walks in one inning. Junior right hander Clay Anderson (Garfield Heights/Trinity) pitched one inning and did not allow a run on one hit.  Freshman righty Drew Schaly (Ashland) allowed two runs on two hits with a walk in an inning.  Senior right hander Max Adams (Massillon/Washington) pitched one inning and allowed one run on no hits with a walk.  Senior righty Jeremy McClure (Mentor) pitched did not allow a run or hit with two strikeouts and a walk.  Senior left hander Spencer Berg (New Albany) allowed one run on one hit with four strikeouts and a walk in two innings pitched.  Baldis pitched the final two innings and did not allow a run or hit with three strikeouts and a walk.

BW is back in action on Saturday, May 8 when it travels to Alliance for an OAC doubleheader against the University of Mount Union on the 23rd Street Field at 1 p.m.
