Baseball Earns OAC Split with Ohio Northern in Weekend Opener

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team earned an Ohio Athletic Conference split with Ohio Northern University to open the weekend series on Fisher Field

Ohio Northern (12-13, 11-10 OAC) won the first game by a final score 9-7.  BW (14-10-1, 13-7-1 OAC) took the second game by a final score of 10-3.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored seven runs on 15 hits as it plated one run in the first, three in the third, two in the fourth, including one on the solo shot by senior All-American center fielder Dudley Taw (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) and one in the fifth off the solo homerun ophomore designated hitter Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen).  The Polar Bears scored nine runs on 10 hits as they pushed two runs across the plate in the sixth, four in the seventh and three in the eighth. 

BW was led at the plate by senior All-OAC shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) as he was a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and one run batted-in (RBI). Taw as he went 3-for-6 with a homerun, two runs scored and two runs batted-in (RBIs).  Junior first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla. /The Sagemont School) was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Junior outfielder Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills / Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Vonderhaar was 2-for-5 with a homerun, one run scored and one RBI.

On the mound, sophomore right hander Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) got the start and the no decision as he allowed six runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in 6.2 innings pitched.  Junior righty Garret McLeod (Medina) took the loss as he allowed two runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk in two-thirds of an inning.  Sophomore right hander Ethan Boyko (North Royalton) pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored 10 runs on 14 hits as they plated one run in each of the first three innings, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the eighth.  Ohio Northern scored three runs on seven hits as it pushed two runs across the plate in the fourth and one in the sixth.

The BW offense was keyed by Ludwick as he went 3-for-5 with a double, triple, three runs scored and two RBIs.  Castillo was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs.  Wilson went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Taw was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Sophomore left fielder Bryce Holt (Richfield/Revere) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

On the mound, freshman righty Gordan Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) picked up his second win of the season as he allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk in six innings. Sophomore right hander Matt Sabin (Mentor) pitched the final three innings to pick up the save as she did not allow a run on three hits with two strikeouts. 

BW is back in action on Sunday, April 25 when it travels to Ada to close out its weekend series with Ohio Northern University on Wander Field at 1 p.m.
