Baseball Splits Rescheduled OAC Doubleheader with Mount Union

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a rescheduled Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against the University of Mount Union on Fisher Field.

BW (19-15-1, 18-12-1 OAC) and Mount Union (27-7, 25-7 OAC) were originally scheduled to play on Sunday, May 9 but those games were washed out by rain.

The Yellow Jackets won the first game by a final score of 8-4.  The Purple Raiders took the second game by a final score of 9-0.

In game one BW scored eight runs on 10 hits as it scored one run in the first and erupted for seven runs in the third.  Mount Union scored four runs on eight hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the fourth inning, one in the sixth and two in the eighth. 

The Yellow Jackets were led at the plate by senior All-OAC shortstop Alex Ludwick as he went 3-for-5 with a double, run scored, run batted-in (RBI) and a stolen base.  Sophomore designated hitter Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.

On the mound, freshman right hander Brendon Hink (Poland /Neshannock {Pa.}) picked up his second win of the season as he allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts and five walks in five innings. Sophomore lefty Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) did not record an out as he allowed one run on one hit with walk.  Wilson, who moved from the outfield, earned his third save as he pitched the final four innings and allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

In game two, BW was held scoreless on three hits. The Purple Raiders scored nine runs on seven hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the fourth, three in the sixth, one in the seventh and four in the ninth.

The Yellow Jackets got a base hit each from Ludwick, Vonderhaar and junior first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla. /The Sagemont School).

On the mound, sophomore right hander Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) suffered the loss as he allowed one unearned run on three hits with nine strikeouts with three walks.  Senior lefty Spencer Berg (New Albany) allowed three runs (two earned) on one hit with two walks in a third of an inning.  Sophomore right hander Ethan Boyko (North Royalton) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits with a walk.  Baldis pitched a hitless and scoreless eighth inning.  Senior righty Max Adams (Massillon/Washington) did not record an out as he allowed two runs with two walks.  Junior right hander Clay Anderson (Garfield Heights/Trinity) pitched a third of an inning and allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit with two walks.  Ludwick moved from shortstop and pitched the final two outs and did not allow a hit with one walk. 

BW is back in action on Saturday, May 15 when it hosts its final home regular season OAC doubleheader against Muskingum University on Seniors' Day at 1 p.m.
