BW Women Finish 2nd and Men 3rd at 2009 OAC Championship Meet; Patrick, Coaches Win Honors

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's outdoor track and field team finished second and the men placed third at the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio.

Highlighting the meet for the Yellow Jackets were junior thrower Greg Patrick (Collins/ Western Reseve), who was named as the OAC "Sparky" Adams Field Event Athlete of the Year, and the coaching staff, including veteran Head Coach Bill Taraschke, was tabbed as the OAC Women's Coaching Staff of the Year.

The Yellow Jacket women scored 108 points to finish second of 10 schools and the men tallied 122.5 points to place third of 10 teams.

Patrick earned the "Sparky" Adams Field Event Athlete of the Year for his efforts in winning the shot put with an NCAA Division III national meet provisional qualifying throw of 54-feet, placed second in the hammer throw with a throw of 163'2" and second in the discus throw with a toss of 152'5". He was All-OAC in each event.

In addition to Patrick, sophomore thrower Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/ Watkins Memorial) won an individual title in the men's discus with a throw of 154-feet and five inches and in the exhibition hammer with a throw of 173'4" and junior D'Arcy Hlavin (Berea), the 2008 OAC Cross Country Runner of the Year, won the 1500-meter run in 4:46.00. In addition, the women's 4 x 800-meter relay team of senior Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./ East Kentwood), freshman Julie Kotesovec (Litchfield/ Medina Buckeye), sophomoreKim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) and Hlavin brought home top honors in a season-best time of 9:23.49 overall.

In addition for the men, junior Steve Price (North Olmsted) earned All-OAC accolades in the javelin with a second place finish with a career-best throw of 185'11", in the long jump with a third place finish at a leap of 21'4" and in the triple jump with a third place finish with a leap of 42'8.75". Also, senior Derek Hill (Fremont/ Ross) was All-OAC in the 5000-meter run with a third place finish in 15:54.27, junior John Geretz (Port Clinton/ Huron) was third in the 200-meter dash in 22.81 seconds and the 4 x 100 meter relay team of sophomore Drew Matak (Salem/ Senior), Geretz, senior Mike Kowal (Parma/ Senior) and freshman Brett Thompson (Shelby) placed third in 42.27 seconds.

For the women in addition to Hlavin and the 4 x 800 relay team, sophomore Erin Norton (Lakewood/ Senior)earned All-OAC honors as she was second in the hammer throw with a throw of 140'1", Chinn was second in the 1500 meters in 4:50.01, Paul was third in the 400-meter dash in 59.99, sophomore Katie White (Berea)was third in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 12:12.57, senior Theresa Carona (Massillon/ Perry) placed third in the women's javelin with a season-best throw of 121'10" , sophomore Rachel Marinucci (Brunswick)was third in the shot put with a throw of 41'7" and the 4 x 100 meter relay team of senior Jordan Hill (Carrollton), Paul, sophomore Emily Oliver (Waynesburg/ Sandy Valley) and sophomore Erin Myosky (Amherst/ Steele) placed third in 49.97 seconds. The top three finishers in each event earned All-OAC honors.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action next Friday, May 1 when they travel to the University of Toledo Invitational Meet. Field events begin at 10:00 a.m.
