BW Outdoor Track Teams Competed at Unscored UNCC Meet in Charlotte, N.C.

BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams both competed on the final day (Saturday, March 21, 2009) of the three-day, unscored University of North Carolina - Charlotte Invitational Meet in Charlotte, North Carolina.
 
The first day of the meet, Thursday, March 19, was dedicated to the first day of the heptathlon (seven women's events) and decathlon (10 men's events). The second day of the meet, Friday, March 20, was comprised of the final events for both the heptathlon and decathlon, some final events and numerous preliminary races.
 
The BW men were led by sophomore Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/ Watkins Memorial) and junior decathleteSteve Price (North Olmsted).  Phipps placed third in the hammer with a throw of 168 feet, nine inches and fourth in the discus with a throw of 146-10. Price placed seventh in the decathlon with 5,816 points and was second amongst the Division III competitors in the field.  His best event score was 740 points with a third-place finish (6-04) in the high hump.
 
In addition, junior James Eberts (North Canton/ Hoover) was seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:53.23, senior Alan Kidon (Chardon) was 10th in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.65 seconds, junior Brett Scarl (North Olmsted) was 12th in the discus with a throw of 124' 00",  junior Mark Buhoveckey (Brunswick/ Parma Padua Fransiscan) was 13th in the 3,000m with a time of 8:58.42, senior Nate Bowen (Fremont/ Ross) placed 14th in the 800 meter run in 1:56.86 and the 1500 at 4:02.93 and freshman Josh Miller (Willard) was 14th in the high jump at 5-10.75. 
 
The BW women were led by sophomore Rachel Marinucci (Brunswick) with a fifth-place hammer throw of 131-10. The four athletes ahead of Marinucci were all DI competitors.
 
Sophomore heptathlete Emily Oliver (Waynesburg/ Sandy Valley) placed seventh in the seven-event heptathlon with 3,549 points. She placed third in the 800m run portion of the heptathlon with a time of 2:37.55.
 
Sophomore Kim Chinn (Zanesville/West Muskingum) placed ninth in the 1500m run with a time of 4:47.21. She was also 13th in the 800m run in 2:19.67. Senior Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./ East Kentwood)was 16th in the 1500 in 4:54.60 and 19th in the 800 in 2:23.74.
 
Sophomore Samantha Robinson (Mount Orab/ Western Brown) placed ninth in the 3000m steeplechase in 12:40.37 and sophomores Karin Coyne (Columbia Station/ Columbia) and Katie White (Berea) were 16th and 20th, respectively, in the 5000m with times of 18:48.67 and 18:57.51.
 
Senior sprinter Jordan Hill (Carrollton) placed 19th in the 200m dash in a time of 25.65 - the top time for DIII athletes in the event.
 
In the shot put, sophomore Erin Norton (Lakewood/ Senior) and Marinucci placed 14th and 15th with respective throws of 35-05 and 34-11. Marinucci was also 15th in the discus throw at 106-11 and was followed by senior Theresa Carona (Canton/ Massillon Perry) in 17th place at 104-01. Carona also finished 10th in the javelin with a throw of 106-02 and 11th in the hammer throw with a toss of 120-11.
 
The Yellow Jacket men and women are back in action next Saturday, March 28 when they host the annual Ohio Athletic Conference East Meet that will feature five OAC schools competing at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.  To obtain both the meet entry information and the meet itinerary, please log onto the BW Athletic Web site at www.bw.edu/athletics/otf/.
