BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's indoor track and field teams both placed second at the Joe Banks Invitational hosted by Ohio Northern tonight (Friday, February 27, 2009) at the ONU Sports Center in Ada.
The Yellow Jacket men scored 131 points and placed second of 10 teams. Host Ohio Nothern University won the men titles.
The BW men recorded four first place finishes and went 1-2-3 in three events. In the field events, BW was led by junior Greg Patrick(Collins/Western Reserve), this week's OAC Field Athlete of the Week and sophomore Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/Watkins Memorial) in the throws. Patrick was first in the shot put with a throw of 50 feet, four inches and Phipps was second with a toss of 49'0.75". In the weight throw, Phipps placed first with a mark of 55'10.25", while Patrick was second with a throw of 50'0". Junior Brett Scarl (North Olmsted) completed the BW sweep of the weight throw with a third place throw of 43'7". In addition, junior Steve Price (North Olmsted) was third in the triple jump with a leap of 40'6.75".
In the men's running events, BW claimed the top three spots in both the 1,000 and 3,000-meter runs. In the 1,000 meters, junior Jimmy Eberts (North Canton/Hoover) was first in 2:36.82, while freshman Tom Wilkin (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) was second in 2:38.79 and junior Jeff Bonezzi (Medina/Senior) was third in 2:39.01. For the 3,000 meters, BW was led by senior Derek Hill (Fremont/Ross) who was first in 9:04.49. Hill was followed by junior Mark Buhovecky (Brunswick/Parma Padua) in second with a time of 9:06.52 and sophomore Brian Gibbons (Rocky River) who was third in 9:09.09.
The BW women had three first place finishers in route to their second place finish. Senior Ashley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) won the 800-meter run in 2:24.31, sophomore Katie White (Berea) took the 3,000-meter run in 11:07.41 and sophomore Rachael Marinucci (Brunswick) was first in the shot put with a throw of 38' 11.5". Also for BW, junior Brittany Giesken (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) was second in both the 800 meters (2:30.56) and mile run (5:30.19). In addition, senior Jordan Hill (Carrollton) was third in the 60-meter dash in 8.16, senior Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg) was third in the 300-meter dash in 43.50 and sophomore Kim Chinn (Zanesville/West Muskingum) was third in the mile run with a time of 5:30.61.
The Yellow Jacket men and women are back in action on Friday, Mar. 6 and Sat. Mar. 7 for the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet in Columbus. The meet is hosted by Capital University, with events starting at 2:00 p.m. Friday and 10:00 a.m. Saturday.
