BW Men Finish First, Women Second, at Ohio Athletic Conference East Meet

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University outdoor track and field teams competed for the first time on the newly installed track and The George Finnie Stadium today (Saturday, March 28, 2009) as it host the Ohio Athletic Conference East Meet in Berea.  The men's team finished first with 220.50 points and the women placed second, with 177.50 points, just 3.5 points behind first place Marietta College.
 
John Carroll University, Mount Union College and Muskingum College also participated.
 
Prior to the beginning of running events, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the new mondo track surface at Finnie Stadium. The surface is just one of five like it in the world and is the same type of surface used at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
 
Highlighting the day for the men were sophomore throwers Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/Watkins Memorial)and junior Greg Patrick (Collins/Western Reserve) who placed first and second respectively in the discus throw with a tosses of 149' 02.00", and 148' 00".  Also finishing in first place was junior distance runner James Eberts (North Canton/ Hoover) in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:04.34.  In the long jump, junior Steve Price (North Olmsted) took first place recording a leap of 21'00.00".  Price also won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.36. Placing first in the 5000-meter run was senior Derek Hill (Fremont/Ross) with a time of 15:35.56.
 
The women's team was led by double winner senior Jordan Hill (Carrollton) who placed first in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, with times of 12.50 and 25.52, respectively.  Also finishing in first place was seniorAshley Scullion (Kentwood, Mich./ East Kentwood) in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:12.67.  Hill combined with sophomore  Kim Chinn (Zanesville/West Muskingum), sophomore Laura Schwartz (Avon), senior Rebekah Paul (Gibsonburg)to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:12.56.
 
The Yellow Jackets return to action next Saturday, April 4 at the Marv Frye Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delware.
