Veterans Poised to Lead Women's Tennis to New Heights

BEREA, Ohio – Under second-year head coach Dean Morse, the Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team aims to make another Ohio Athletic Conference tournament appearance in 2019-20.

BW wrapped up the 2018-19 season with an OAC quarterfinal appearnace, after an overall record of 4-14, and an OAC mark of 4-4 in the regular season. Morse returns two All-OAC athletes, which includes one senior, three juniors, and five incoming freshmen for the upcoming season.

The lone senior returning is Academic All-OAC Becca Liebler (Medina). Liebler was tied for first on the squad with eight singles victories and was 6-2 in conference play.  

The junior class includes Academic All-OAC Emma Hubbard (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon High School), Academic All-OAC and All-OAC Ashtyn Morris (Salem), and two-time All-OAC Jayde Robinson (Cincinnati/School for Creative & Performing Arts). Hubbard registered a 7-9 record in singles, with four at the No. 5 spot. Morris earned an honorable mention selection after being tied for first on the team with eight singles victories, while securing six victories at No.1 doubles. Robinson, who made the All-OAC second-team, was also tied for first on the team with eight singles victories, with five coming at the No. 1 position.

Freshmen Kailin Breedlove (Parma), Elizabeth Cole (Shaker Heights), Kamryn DiRocco (Copley), Carey Shaffer (Sharon), and Gina Upholzer (Strongsville) will all aim to provide depth and versatility to the Yellow Jacket lineup.

The Yellow Jackets will open the fall portion of the schedule with a road match against non-conference opponent Franciscan University on September 3. BW will then travel to Adrian (Mich.) College the following weekend for a single match on September 9. The Yellow Jackets will host Notre Dame College on September 11 for the inaugural home match of the season and then close out the fall schedule in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships over the dates of September 19-21. BW hosts Capital University on March 21 to open conference play.

The OAC Tournament Quarterfinals will be contested on Tuesday April 28, with the semifinals on Friday May 1. The championship match will be decided on Saturday May 2 at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
