Women’s Swimming and Diving Places Fourth at OAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's swimming and diving team had one Ohio Athletic Conference champion, set one school record and finished in fourth place on the third and final day of competition at the OAC Championships hosted by Wilmington College in the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of the University of Akron.

BW finished fourth of five teams with 560 points.  The Yellow Jackets, who finished third a year ago, have now placed fourth in three of the last four championships. John Carroll University won its third straight championship with 800 points. 

The top three individuals and the top two relay teams earn All-OAC honors.                                                                                                                                       

BW was led by freshman All-OAC freestyler Bella Ratino (Mentor/Hawken) as she won one event and set two school-records.  Ratino opened the night by winning the 1,650-yard freestyle in a school-record time of 17:39.80.  She finished her first championships as she took third in 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:09.55.  This morning, Ratino broke a nine-year old record in the 200-back when she posted a time of 2:07.81 in the prelims.  In the three-day event, Ratino won two titles, set three individual school records, was a member of one school-record relay and claimed three individual All-OAC honors and one All-OAC relay accolade. 

In addition, junior All-OAC freestyler Allie Thorson (Amherst/Marion Steele) was the runner-up in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 17:59.96 to earn her fifth career All-OAC honor and third of the championships.  Sophomore All-OAC diver Lauren Franz (Canton/GlenOak) claimed her second straight OAC accolade when she placed second in the 3-meter 11-dive event with a career-best total points of 282.95. Freshman freestyler Madeleine Pierce (Perry) earned her first career runner-up and her second All-OAC accolade as he finished second in the 100-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 54.08 seconds. Junior All-OAC freestyler Olivia Jacob (Canton/McKinley) took third in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 18:07.59 to earn her fifth career All-OAC honor and second of the three-day event. Junior All-OAC stroker Erika Nockengost (Cuyahoga Falls) finished sixth in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:18.44. Freshman Kayla McClintock (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) was sixth in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 18:36.49.  Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC diver/stroker Ellie Clymer (Independence) placed eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke in a season-best time of 2:26.59. Sophomore All-OAC stroker Marissa Kural (LaGrange, Ill. /Lyons Township) finished 10th in the 200-yard backstroke in a career-best time of 2:17.70.

In relay action, the 400-yard freestyle squad of Nockengost, Pierce, senior freestyler Claire Onchuck (Darrien, Ill./Hinsdale South) and Thorson finished fourth in a time of 3:40.60.
