Women's Soccer Team Defeats Oberlin

OBERLIN, OH- Sophomore forward Heather Keller (Parma) scored one goals and added three assists as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team (2-0 overall) defeated host Oberlin College, 6-1, tonight (Wednesday, September 7, 2011) at Fred Shults Field.

B-W built a commanding 4-0 advantage at the intermission and coasted to the victory.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring just 6:47 ingto the match when sophomore midfielder Kayla Losco (Aliquippa, Pa./ Hopewell) received a cross from the far side of the field to the near side post from sophomore defender Elizabeth Helser (Fort Wayne, Ind./ Canterbury), who received an assist. The goal gave B-W a 1-0 lead and was Losco's second this season and the third of her career.

Then B-W put the game away with a three-goal flurry in a span of 3:16. First, senior MF Lindsey Cooper (Westerville/ New Albany) scored her fifth career goal at 18:59 on a header via an assist from sophomore MF Rachel Gokey (Seville/Lodi Cloverleaf) off a corner kick. Then Gokey scored at 21:47 for her third career goal via an assist from Keller off a cross from the near side of the field to the middle. And, Keller finished the asault when she scored unassisted at 22:15 for her eighth career tally to make the score 4-0.


In the second half, Oberlin scored its lone goal when freshman MF Megan Michel tallied at 51:40 via a cross that deflected off of a defender and then was redirected into the goal to cut B-W's lead to 4-1.


Undaunted, the Yellow Jackets fired back with a goal by Losco that was a 25-yard blast from the top of the box following a pass from Keller for a 5-1 advantage, and junior forward Brigitte Petrash (Parma/ Normandy)scored her second goal this season and fourth career goal at the 65:27 mark with Keller assisting for the third time.


B-W outshot the Yeowomen, 21-9, and placed 12 shots on goal.  The Yellow Jackets also won the corner kick battle, 6-2.


In net, B-W freshman Gabrielle Bodo (Alliance/ St. Thomas Aquinas) started, played the first 45 minutes, faced five Yeowomen shots, did not allow a goal and made four saves. She was followed by sophomoreKristina Mathur (Mason) who started the second half, played 34:57, faced four shots, allowed the lone Oberlin goal and made two saves. Freshman Claire LoPresti (Bethel Park, Pa.) played the final 10:03, faced two shots, did not allow a goal and made one save.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action on on Saturday and Sunday, September 10-11 when they travel to Transylvania (Ky.) to play Centre College (Ind.) at 7:30 p.m on Saturday and than play Transylvania (Ky.) at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The first home game is on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when B-W hosts traditional rival Hiram College on the Tressel Field turf at The George Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m.


On Saturday, October 22, the Yellow Jacket men's and women's soccer teams will host Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College in a doubleheader that will be televised by SportsTime Ohio (STO).  This is the fourth straight year that B-W has televised a soccer doubleheader and will put a perfect 6-0 record on the line.
