Petrella Earns Second Career D3wrestle.com Wrestler of the Week Honor

MANHEIM, Pa. – For the second time in his career, Baldwin Wallace University All-American and No. 1 nationally ranked senior 149-pounder Michael Petrella (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) has been named the DS3wrestle.com Men's Wrestler of the Week. 

Petrella, who earned is his fist honor as a sophomore in 2021, led the No. 5 Yellow Jackets to the team title and won the 149-pound title at the 37th John Summa Invitational on February 3.

He won a 20-3 technical fall over Torin Bishop of St. John Fisher (N.Y.) College in the first round.  Petrella then won pinfall in 1:08 over Jacob Reif of Ohio Northern University.  He then posted a 17-1 technical fall over Cole Hornet of Waynesburg (Pa.) University.  In the third round, Petrella won by pinfall in 2:06 over Nathan Leko of Otterbein University for his 100th career victory. He claimed the title with 5-1 decision over Nico Taddy of NCAA Division II West Liberty (W. Va.) University.

In BW's fourth straight Ohio Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday night, Petrella did not wrestle.

This season, the defending NCAA Division II Champion has a record of 29-0 with 11 pins, a team-high tying 11 technical falls and four major decisions.

For his career, Petrella ranks 12th on the all-time schools wins list with a record of 101-4.  He has recorded 38 pins, 19 technical falls and 14 major deicsions.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, February 9 when they travel to nearby South Euclid for a non-conference dual against NCAA Division II Notre Dame College in the Murphy Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
