BEREA, Ohio – Baldwin Wallace University women's golf head coach John Kapusta '87 has announced his retirement, effective immediately.
"It is with deep emotion that I have decided to retire from my position as the coach for the women's golf team," Kapusta said. "These past six years have been some of the most memorable of my life. I will miss coaching tremendously. Coaching at Baldwin Wallace University, my alma mater, has provided me with a challenge and a sense of personal fulfillment beyond anything I could have ever imagined. My greatest hope is that I was able to make as much of an impact upon the student-athletes that I had the honor to coach as they did upon my life."
"We appreciate all the work John has put in to building our women's golf program," said Director of Athletics Kris A. Diaz '78. "He has rebuilt our numbers as well as the competitiveness of the program. We appreciate him doing that and appreciate that he has put the program on the right footing for the future."
Kapusta made an impact on the women's golf program from his very first season, leading the Yellow Jackets to an Ohio Athletic Conference title and a 17th-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships. As a result, he was named the OAC Women's Golf Coach of the Year. He also won a total of six different tournaments across his first two years at the helm.
Golf runs through the family as Kapusta's daughter Rebecca is one of the best to ever tee up for the Yellow Jackets. She owns three of the top-25 all-time season stroke averages, including the fourth best in program history at 84.40 strokes. A lifelong golfer and regular league competitor, Kapusta was involved in the high school golf careers of both his daughter and his son. He also had 15 years of coaching experience between basketball and baseball.
A 1987 graduate of the University in business administration, Kapusta spent 42 years working at North American Manufacturing in a variety of different positions, holding the position of Manager of Procurement and Planning when he retired in 2014.
He and his wife Kathleen reside in Independence.
Baldwin Wallace University will be conducting a national search for Kapusta's replacement and more information will be available in the coming months. BW is a comprehensive liberal arts institution located in Berea, Ohio, a suburb 12 miles southwest of Cleveland with an undergraduate enrollment of 3,000 students.
