Softball Splits Home Finale with Hiram

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball split a non-conference doubleheader with Hiram College in its home finale on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.

Hiram (18-12) won the opener by a final score of 8-0 in five innings.   BW (13-21) earned a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets were held scoreless on three hits.  The Terriers scored eight runs on eight hits as it pushed three runs across the plate in the third inning, four in the fourth and one in the fifth. 

At the Plate

  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC right fielder Ashley Matousek (Sagamore Hills/Akron Archbishop Hoban) was 2-for-2 with a stolen base
  • Junior Hannah Welling (Ravenna), who made her first collegiate start at second base, was 1-for-2

In the Circle

  • Freshman right hander Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Notre Dame), who made her collegiate debut, took the loss as she allowed seven runs (four earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks in four innings pitched
  • Freshman righty Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) allowed one run on two hits with one walk.

In game two, BW scored six runs on nine hits as it plated three runs in the first inning, one in the second on an inside the park homerun by sophomore All-OAC shortstop Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), which was her first collegiate homer, and two in the sixth. Hiram scored three runs on five hits as it pushed two runs across the plate in the sixth and one in the seventh.

At the Plate

  • Mau was 4-for-4 with a dinger, run batted-in (RBI), run scored and three stolen bases
  • Senior Academic All-OAC left fielder Amanda Crisler (Lorain/Amherst) was 1-for-3 with a career-high three RBIs.
  • Frederickson was 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored
  • Sophomore second baseman Ana LaGuardia (Medina) was 1-for-2 with her first career RBI
  • Sophomore third baseman Grace Bowman (New Windsor, Md./Linganore) was 1-for-3
  • Freshman center fielder Kenzie Morsillo (Middleburg Heights/Padua Franciscan) was 1-for-4 with a run scored

In the Circle

  • Freshman right hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) earned her third win of the season as she allowed three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in a career-high seven innings.

The Yellow Jackets close out the regular season on Saturday, April 30 when they travel to Marietta for an OAC doubleheader against Marietta College on Marietta Field at 1 p.m.
