Softball Sweeps Pitt-Bradford (Pa.) in Rescheduled Doubleheader

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford in a rescheduled non-conference doubleheader on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.  

BW (4-12) and Pitt-Bradford (4-14) were originally schedyled to play on March 20 but the games were postponed until today due to transportation issues with the Panthers.

The Yellow Jackets won the first game by a final score of 8-2 and rallied twice to win the nightcap by a score of 6-4.

In game one, the BW scored eight runs on 11 hits as it plated five runs in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.   Pitt-Bradford scored two runs on five hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the sixth and seventh innings.

 

At the Plate

  • Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference shortstop Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) went 3-for-4 with a run-batted in (RBI) and two runs scored
  • Junior first baseman Raegan Thompson (Mentor) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs
  • Junior Academic All-OAC second baseman Alicia Saxton (Boardman) was 2-for-3 with an RBI
  • Four other Yellow Jacket hitters had a base knock, including the first collegiate hit for sophomore third baseman Grace Bowman (New Windsor, Md./Linganore)
  • Sophomore center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands) had a double
  • Junior pitcher Hannah Welling (Ravenna), sophomore All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) and freshman outfielder Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Notre Dame) each had an RBI

In the Circle

  • Freshman right hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) won her first collegiate game as she allowed one run on four hits with a career-best eight strikeouts and one walk in six innings.
  • Freshman righty Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) pitched the final inning and allowed one unearned run on one hit with a strikeout and walk.

In game two, BW scored six runs on 11 hits as it plated two runs in the first inning, one in the fourth and three in the sixth.  The Panthers scored four runs on seven hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings. 

At the Plate

  • Sophomore third baseman Julia Gersey (Solon) went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI
  • Saxton was 3-for-4 with a double
  • Five other Yellow Jacket hitters had a base knock
  • Frederickson had a double
  • Bricker had an RBI and run scored
  • Mau had an RBI, run scored, walk and a stolen base
  • Coggins had an RBI and a walk
  • Senior Academic All-OAC right fielder Amanda Crisler (Lorain/Amherst) had an RBI and a walk
  • Senior All-OAC designated player Ashley Matousek (Sagamore Hills/Akron Archbishop Hoban) had a run scored and a walk

In the Circle

  • Welling started the game and allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts in five innings.
  • Junior All-OAC right hander Nikki Camarati (Brunswick/Holy Name) picked up the win as she did not allow a run, hit, or walk with three strikeouts in two innings.

BW is back in action on Saturday, April 2 as it travels to New Concord for an OAC doubleheader against Muskingum University on the Donna J. Newberry Field at 1 p.m.  The next home games are on Saturday, April 9 when the team hosts an OAC doubleheader against Capital University at 1 p.m.
