Day Five of Rebel Games Ends with a Split for Softball

KISSIMMEE, FLA. – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team split a pair of non-conference games on the fifth day of the annual Rebel Spring Games at the Osceola County Softball Complex.

BW (4-6) opened the tough 2-1 loss to Widener (Pa.) University.  The Yellow Jackets snapped a four game losing skid in the nightcap when they posted their first shutout of the season with a 5-0 defeat of Farmingdale State (N.Y.) College.

Against Widener, BW scored one run on two hits as it pushed a crossed its lone run in the top of the first inning.  Widener scored two runs on hits hits as it plated one run in the third and the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs.

The BW offense was led by freshman third baseman Paige Loveless (Mechanicsburg) who went 1-for-3 with her first career run-batted in.  Sophomore left fielder Lena Kortis (Massillon/Perry) had the other Yellow Jacket as she had a base knock in the top of the seventh inning.

In the circle, junior Academic All-OAC pitcher Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) allowed two runs (unearned) on eight hits with three strikeouts. Morgan is now 2-3 on the season.

Against Farmingdale, BW scored five runs on seven hits as it plated three runs in the first, one in the third and one in the fourth.  Farmingdale Stated had no runs on five hits.

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by freshman designated player/first baseman Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) as she went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored.  Five other BW players tallied a base knock. Kortis had a base hit and two RBIs and Loveless had another base knock and RBI.   Freshman shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) had a base hit and a RBI.

In the circle, junior pitcher Samantha Dostall (Oberlin/Firelands), who is this week's OAC Pitcher-of-the-Week, picked up her second victory and first shutout of the season as she did not allow a run on five hits with a career-high 12 strikeouts with just one walk in seven innings of action.   Dostall has now five career shutouts.

BW ends its season-opening trip to Florida at the Rebel Spring games on Friday, March 11 when it plays a pair of non-conference games against Rowan (N.J.) University and Beloit (Wis.) College.  The game against Rowan is at 11:15 a.m. and the Beloit game is slated for a 3:45 p.m. start.
