Softball Earns a Split to Conclude Rebel Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, FLA. – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team concluded the annual Rebel Spring Games by splitting a pair of non-conference games at the Osceola County Softball Complex.

BW (5-7) opened the day with a 10-1 loss to Rowan (N.J.) University in five innings.  The Yellow Jackets closed the day and its spring break trip with a 4-0 shutout against Beloit (Wis.) College.  It was the second shutout of the week for BW.

Against Rowan, the Yellow Jackets scored one run on four hits as they pushed its lone run over the plate in the top of the second inning.  Rowan scored 10 runs on 13 hits as it three runs in the second, one run in the fourth and six in the decisive fifth inning.

BW got one hit each from junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference second baseman DJ Rogers (Warren/Champion), sophomore left fielder Lena Kortis (Massillon/Perry), freshman shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) and freshman centerfielder Abbie Thompson (Madison).  English and Kortis each tallied an extra base hit with a double while Rogers had the lone run batted-in.

In the circle, junior Academic All-OAC pitcher Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits with three strikeouts. Morgan ends the trip with a record of 2-4 and an earned run average of 2.92.  She recorded 29 strikeouts in 36 innings. 

Against Beloit, the Yellow Jackets scored four runs on eight hits as it plated three runs in the first, one in the fourth and one in the fifth.  Beloit had no runs on just one hit.

The BW offense was led by Kortis as she went 2-for-2 with a double, 2 RBIs, a walk, a stolen base and a run scored.  Six other Yellow Jackets recorded as a base knock as English and junior designated player Nicolette Kunath (Columbia/Columbia Station) each had an extra base hit with a double.  Kunath and Rogers each had an RBI.

In the circle, junior pitcher Samantha Dostall (Oberlin/Firelands), who is this week's OAC Pitcher-of-the-Week, picked up her third victory and second shutout of the season as she did not allow a run on just one hit with seven strikeouts and just one walk in seven innings.   Dostall concludes the trip with a record of 3-2 and an ERA of 1.60.  She recorded 34 strikeouts in 39.1 innings pitched.

BW is now idle until Friday, March 25 when it travels to Alliance to open OAC play with a doubleheader against the University of Mount Union at 1 p.m.  The first home contest is scheduled for Thursday, March 31 when the team hosts Hiram College for a non-conference doubleheader on the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field at 3:30 p.m.
